Newborn babies are extremely vulnerable to infections, including sepsis, which affects three million babies annually and causes over half a million deaths. Many of these deaths occur due to the unavailability of effective antibiotics, a problem worsened by drug-resistant infections. Listen to this episode of One World, One Health with Professor Mike Sharland, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at St. George's University of London, as he tells us about the terrifying growth of drug-resistant infections in newborns and the need for better antibiotics for vulnerable babies. CDC's new COVID recommendations - What patient and worker advocacy organizations are saying -- It is not good. Below are additional supporting resources from major organizations of scientists, and worker and patient advocacy organizations concerned about the recent CDC Decision. Science Friday (on NPR -- March 15, 2024): What We Know After 4 Years Of COVID-19 https://lnkd.in/evsV8kpE National Nurses United (Largest Nurses Union in the United States)March 7, 2024 Email: "We’ll be blunt, these latest CDC guidelines are a complete disappointment. The CDC’s updated guidance for respiratory viruses fails to recognize the significant health threat that Covid continues to pose, including the threat of Long Covid. Shortening the Covid isolation guidance from five days to potentially just 24 hours based on the presence of fever ignores the available and extensive scientific evidence that people with Covid-19 infections often remain infectious well beyond five days." Sign Petition: https://lnkd.in/eh4gb6a6 American Association of Kidney Patients (One of the largests association of immunocompromised patients)"New CDC Respiratory Guidance Ignores Kidney Patient Concerns" "CDC’s failure to effectively engage stakeholders in policy development and communications has led to other recent controversies. The agency has been under public and media scrutiny related to the management of the HICPAC and charges over a lack of transparency, failure to engage a broad-range of scientific experts, and selective use of evidence to develop new, draft infection control guidelines for health facilities, including hospitals (Read FORBES article / Read FORBES article)." "The propensity of the virus to be spread by infected but otherwise healthy individuals2, along with the suboptimal efficacy of the updated booster to prevent hospitalizations in the general adult population3, are of great concern. Studies continue to show that immunocompromised and immunosuppressed individuals are more likely to experience severe complications if infected with the virus and yet the guidelines do not offer the level of protection necessary to mitigate this heightened risk." https://lnkd.in/e3Vm2dzH

Physician Leader | AI in Healthcare | Neonatal Critical Care | Quality Improvement | Patient Safety | Co-Founder NeoMIND-AI and Clinical Leaders Group
Children's Hospital Colorado -- This made me think of two things: the book -- The Scalpel and the Silver Bear, by Dr. Lori Alvord, MD, the first female Navajo surgeon. In the book (which is a great read and describes the dedication, passion, and wisdom of Dr. Alvord), she highlights that Western #Medicine and ancient tribal healing/philosophy of a balanced and harmonious life can work together to provide wellness. It's been well over a decade since I read the book, but I recall a tribal medicine man proclaimed that abundant rain had caused a rise in an infectious epidemic. He was dismissed by modern/western medicine/scientists. As it turns out, the rain had created abundant feed for rodents that then flourished and spread the infection-- a disruption of nature's harmony. Now to my second thought, are there patterns that we humans have not put together in understanding this paralyzing illness? Could #AI and, in particular #machinelearning, identify important patterns from epidemiological, #health, and environmental data? So combine Western Medicine + Non-traditional Medicine + AI to better understand this disease? #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter https://lnkd.in/gepqpb-Z
Dr. Kevin Messacar, our pediatric infectious disease expert, suggests that instead of attempting to predict the return of the mysterious virus known as EV-D68, which is associated with paralysis, it is better to prepare for it. Discover what he thinks about the 2022 outbreak that wasn't.

🔍 Discover five facts about pediatric long Covid: 1️⃣ Definitions: Long Covid is an umbrella term that describes ongoing symptoms and health effects after a COVID-19 infection. The NIH defines long Covid as symptoms that persist 4 weeks or more after the acute phase of the infection. 2️⃣ Significant Numbers: With 20% of US Covid cases in children and an estimated prevalence of 10-20%, up to 5.8 million kids may be affected by long Covid. 3️⃣ Diverse Symptoms: Pediatric long Covid compromises a collection of symptoms and conditions that can affect any organ system. 4️⃣ Persistent Symptoms: Symptoms may last weeks, months, even years after the acute infection, affecting everyday life like how children play or if they are able to go to school. 5️⃣ Vulnerable Populations: While long Covid can happen to any child, even if they had mild or no symptoms during their COVID infection, children with disabilities or complex medical needs may be at higher risk. https://lnkd.in/dzj8ZjQH These data do not indicate an increase in the incidence or severity of events of RSV LRTI in the second year of life among infants administered nirsevimab prior to their first RSV season. Although ADE is a theoretical concern of RSV prevention approaches, there was no evidence of such an effect in infants who received nirsevimab.
