In one sense you don’t want to risk investing in a larger venue, then on the other hand you don’t want to max out capacity & limit your audience What to do? Move forward with a space which enables you to play around with layouts & breakouts. This will give you the flexibility to move goal posts Start with cabaret in mind - maxed out in cabaret for your conference? No problem, switch to theatre style….maxing out at theatre? "London’s theater world is increasingly simmering with complaints over soaring ticket prices, and a perception that they are creeping closer to Broadway levels. Even as producers insist that a fraction of tickets must be sold at steep prices to offset cheap seats for low earners, concern is growing that a night at the theater is becoming an unaffordable luxury... This year’s results... showed that the average price for tickets in the most expensive price group was £141, or about $170 (a decade ago, the figure was a much lower £81). This year’s average was still “a long, long way behind Broadway... However... the average price of the least expensive tickets had risen by more than inflation to £25, or $30... For many West End producers, the perception of a price hike is a source of growing frustration. Patrick Gracey, a producer who sits on the board of the Society of London Theater, said that the news media published articles about high ticket prices because it “gets clicks.” Those stories were “misleading audiences about the availability of affordable tickets,” he said. Last year, Gracey said, theatergoers paid an average £54, or about $66, to see a West End show. (The average price on Broadway last week was double that at $125, according to data from The Broadway League.) Producers were facing soaring costs, Gracey added... Even with those pressures, Gracey said producers were working to keep theater accessible and were offering cheap tickets for those who couldn’t splurge. The problem was with audience perception, said Nick Hytner, a co-founder of the Bridge Theater. Producers needed to develop “a compelling counternarrative” that theater was affordable or else young people would decide that the art form wasn’t for them. Reflecting on my journey with La Crosse Community Theatre's expansion into the old church building, the question "What did I get myself into?" feels particularly relevant. I’ve embarked on something both exciting and daunting. This historic space is full of potential, but realizing it will take more than just optimism and a fresh coat of paint. When we chose this church, it felt like a perfect blend of La Crosse’s history and our theatre’s future. The building has charm and character, but it’s also full of quirks—architectural features that weren’t designed with modern theatre in mind. As I settle in, I’m beginning to grasp the challenges ahead. Walking through these halls, it’s impossible not to feel the weight of what’s ahead. The building is full of potential—to become a hub for creativity and a gathering place for our community. But right now, it’s all just potential. The real work is just beginning. We have big plans, but they’re still just plans—ideas waiting to be transformed into reality. From designing new spaces to ensuring this historic building meets modern needs, there’s a lot to do. It’s a little overwhelming, but also exciting, knowing we're on the brink of something transformative for La Crosse Community Theatre. The road ahead will be challenging, with moments of doubt and unexpected surprises. But that’s part of the journey—navigating the unknown, adapting to challenges, and staying focused on my goals. This project will take time, effort, and collaboration. I’ll need to test ideas and learn as I go, but I’m committed to seeing it through because I believe in the potential of this space. So here I am, at the beginning of a long and winding journey. I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I’m confident this is a journey worth taking. There’s a lot of work to be done, but also a lot to look forward to. This building has the potential to become something truly special, and I’m ready to do the work to make that happen. In the end, what did I get myself into? A project full of challenges and possibilities—one that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’ve only just begun, but I’m excited to see where this journey will take me.

Always interesting to see data like this, but the angle here is a bit unfair I think. There's a passing acknowledgement that production costs are higher in London, so higher ticket prices are to be expected versus non-London theatres... But then the headline is that top-price London tickets are nearly £100 more expensive, instead of the much more interesting stat that entry-price London tickets are only £4 more expensive (£25 versus £21). To me, that says (1) London theatres are actually doing a much better job than they get credit for at keeping entry-level prices accessible, and (2) there is a natural floor around £15-20, which even non-London theatres will struggle to get under. The challenge, clearly, is communicating what great value a £25 theatre ticket is, no matter where you are in the country.
