My advice to prospective #cybersecurity students: Ignore the hype of school recruiters, degree mills, and online sites offering free and easy certifications. Yes, Australia has a serious cybersecurity shortage. Yes, companies are begging for qualified individuals to fill a variety of cyber-related jobs. But no, just getting a cert or a degree may not be enough. Find out what industry needs, what interests you, and use your existing skills and learn how to combine or integrate them into cyber-related functions. Be smart, do your due diligence and find your best path in cyber to get the best job you can. The Albanese government this week introduced long-awaited legislation to parliament which is set to revolutionise Australia’s cyber security preparedness. The article discusses the new cyber security legislation introduced by the Australian government. Cyber Security Minister Tony Burke says the Cyber Security Act is a “long-overdue step” that reflects the government’s concern about these threats. In discussing incident response in my class in cybersecurity, I address the often ignored subject of business continuity (BCP) and continuity of operations (COOP) planning. The recent hurricane in Florida, last year's OPTUS outage, and repeated brushfire emergencies in Australia aptly demonstrated the need for businesses to consider the cyber-physical aspects of a loss of connectivity, data access and working space. This graphic from one of the cybersecurity briefings serves to enable a discussion with the students of the planning concept of restoring a business to full functionality in the event of a natural or technological disaster. The discussion centres around how organisations can better prepare for the inevitable disasters that may befall a business. What are your plans for business restoration, business continuity, and the ability to access important data assets in your organisation? Does your incident response planning include a BCP or COOP to ensure you and your employees are able to effectively respond to a disaster? How often does your organisation practice its continuity of operations planning?

It is uncommon to see an analytical piece addressing cyber operations produced by an adversarial nation that reconciles cyberintelligence with state sponsored information.
