#2024YearInReview | In April, the Rural Placemaking Studio announced its partnership with 13 rural communities to enhance their unique local assets. From pocket parks to colorful murals, the communities collaborated with students from the IU Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design to bring their creative visions to life. MoMA Acquires Work of UNM Chair of Architecture Chris Cornelius The Museum of Modern Art recently acquired the work of Chris Cornelius, University of New Mexico Professor of Architecture. This acquisition into the Architecture and Design permanent collection is internationally recognized as highly prestigious. MoMA’s acquisition includes three drawings from his Radio Free Alcatraz project (2014) and one model (2009) titled “Bear,” from a series of models called “Bending Out of Course.” You can view the collected work here. This work is featured in the exhibition Down to Earth opening on November 22, 2024. It will demonstrate “how the design of the built environment can help foster resilient communities, mitigate the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, and re-establish connections between human and nonhuman life.” Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, Robert González stated of this recognition, “As the first Indigenous person trained as an architect to be in the Architecture and Design collection, Chris Cornelius is a central voice of a new generation of designers in the built environment disciplines who are helping us to reframe our relationship with the land through an Indigenous lens. We’re fortunate to have Cornelius at the helm of our Architecture program in a region poised to lead in this timely reframing.”

A major reuse and expansion project for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has culminated in the recent opening of the NHM Commons, a transformative new wing and community hub on the southwest side of the Museum campus. Targeting LEED Gold certification, Frederick Fisher and Partners designed the 25,000-square-foot adaptive reuse and 30,000-square-foot addition to the NHM Commons with landscape architecture by Studio-MLA and integrated engineering services provided by Buro Happold including building services and facade engineering, plus energy modeling and daylighting strategy. https://lnkd.in/gGkaCsth #design #daylighting #architecture #engineering 📸: Benny Chan, courtesy Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County.

Today is World Architecture Day – congratulations! Recently, I was asked: what is the mission of an architect? In my view, it is to create spaces that not only meet the needs of society but also embody an expressive artistic vision. Architectural objects go beyond mere utility—they become places where people live, where concerts are held, where children are educated. They shape the city’s silhouette, establish design codes, create focal points, and program the space. A crucial part of an architect’s mission is the ability to unite all project stakeholders, listen attentively, process information, and envision the future. Whether designing a single building or an entire neighborhood, the architect must balance the interests of active participants like urban communities, developers, and governments, alongside those who cannot voice their demands directly—such as the city and its context. These silent forces must be thoughtfully considered.
