Exciting news! 🌟 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has granted Chicago $9.9 million to support the Community Geothermal Heating and Cooling Initiative. This groundbreaking project will implement a community wide geothermal heating and cooling system and sets an example of how widespread adoption of geothermal systems can help electrify the building sector, reduce energy costs for families, and boost grid resilience. We’re thrilled to partner with Blacks In Green, The Accelerate Group, Geothermal Exchange Organization (GEO), Citizens Utility Board (Illinois), Climate Jobs Illinois, and IL AFL-CIO on this transformative project! Here’s to a greener, more sustainable future! ♻️ 🌾 #Sustainability #Geothermal #GreenInitiatives Follow the link to learn more. 👇

Another Community Geothermal Project Ann Arbor has received a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to install a community-scale geothermal heating and cooling system in the Bryant neighborhood. This initiative, in partnership with local residents, will provide sustainable, cost-effective energy solutions to 262 homes, a school, and a community center by 2028. This project demonstrates geothermal's potential to drive economic growth, lower emissions, and empower communities, serving as a replicable model for other cities, as Presidio, Texas is doing. #GeothermalEnergy #Sustainability #Drilling #CommunityEnergy #DrillingInnovation #EnergyEfficiency #AnnArbor #DOE #Presidio

Utility driven neighborhood geothermal installed in Framingham! This is this systems thinking and ACTION required to solve our climate crisis. “If we only have the people who can afford it, who have the know-how transitioning, it’s kind of spotty,” said Ania Camargo, thermal energy networks manager at the Building Decarbonization Coalition, a nonprofit working to eliminate fossil fuels from buildings. “It’s an unmanaged transition that creates a negative feedback loop with fewer and fewer people left on the gas system to cover all of the fixed costs. If that happens, then the price of gas goes way up and you have what they call a utility death spiral.” Geothermal heating built and maintained by utility companies could offer a future for the companies, and their employees, without leaving low income families on the hook for maintaining an aging gas system. #Sustainablecities #Systemsthinking #Climateleadership https://lnkd.in/gxKDyJ3D

Proposed Framingham project will "represent the first utility-owned community geothermal network to connect to an adjacent operational loop, establishing guidelines for the interconnection and growth of geothermal networks."
These community-focused geothermal projects in Massachusetts and Chicago just got a federal boost, helping them bring clean heating and cooling and lower utility bills to residents who need the savings most. Read more from Blacks In Green and HEET:

Leading Change! Already an Innovative Geothermal pilot using Chicago’s Alley infrastructure, but the multiple benefit makes this brillant!! “The pilot, also located in West Woodlawn, utilizes alleys to circumvent the need for vast open plots for subterranean loop fields that form the heart of a geothermal array. Locating the bulk of geothermal loop lines in alleyways also sidesteps the underground congestion of existing utility infrastructure typically located underneath city streets.”
Two nonprofits dedicated to working toward a just transition from fossil fuels awarded U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding for geothermal pilots. Congratulations to Blacks In Green and HEET. My latest story for Energy News Network.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado. (KJCT) - Governor Jared Polis celebrated Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) nation-leading geothermal heating system for being recognized as one of only 19 case studies across the nation by the Department of Energy as one of the best geothermal systems. CMU’s geothermal system regulates 1.2 million square feet of building space and has saved the university $15.9 million in heating and cooling costs since 2008; reducing CMU’s carbon footprint by nearly 18,000 metric tons of CO2 each year. Did you know that the Oklahoma State Capitol is a geothermal marvel? This impressive building uses over 600 geothermal heat pumps, making it a leading example of sustainable energy use. Here are some cool facts about geothermal energy technology and its benefits: 1. Efficient Heating and Cooling: Geothermal systems use the stable temperatures underground to heat and cool buildings, providing consistent comfort year-round. 2. Energy Savings: By tapping into the earth's natural heat, geothermal systems can reduce energy consumption by up to 70% compared to conventional HVAC systems. 3. Environmental Impact: Geothermal energy is clean and renewable, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the building's carbon footprint. 4. Longevity: Geothermal systems are durable and require less maintenance, often lasting 25 years or more for the indoor components and over 50 years for the ground loop. 5. Cost-Effective: While initial installation can be higher, the operational savings and potential incentives make geothermal a smart long-term investment. The Oklahoma State Capitol's commitment to geothermal energy demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to sustainability and energy efficiency. Let's embrace the power of geothermal technology for a greener future! 🌿 Here’s to lobbying and being apart of the change! The future of solar energy is looking bright as the Biden Administration proposes a major expansion of public lands available for streamlined solar development in the Western U.S. With aims to support the surge in solar energy projects, the plan updates the 2012 Western Solar Plan, identifying lands suitable for large solar projects across 11 states. The proposal balances conservation with industry needs and aims to shift land use from fossil fuel production to clean energy. While the plan has industry and some environmental support, critics argue it prioritizes industry over environmental concerns.
