Attention all Electrical Design Engineers who are currently working for a large, corporate multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy. I do appreciate that working for a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy does have its advantages. However, have you ever wondered what it would be like to work for a privately owned Building Services Engineering Consultancy? Below are a few things to consider; 1 – Working for a specialist building services consultancy means MEP Design is core business, it is not a bolt on or a support function to another business unit. 2 – The Partners that run the business are all on the same page as you, they are all MEP Engineers understand the time it takes to do an excellent job. Your charge out rates are not dictated or heavily reduced by other disciplines as part of a tender or framework agreement. 3 – A privately owned consultancy does not have to report to external shareholders and decides where to invest their profits. In a downturn, they can use their retained profit to ensure that all of their employees remain employed. They will not embark on a restructure or redundancy process just to “cut costs” and keep investors happy. 4 – Working for a building services consultancy ensures you learn how to lead a project from inception to completion, rather than just completing set tasks or packages of work. 5 – Generally speaking, promotion is easier as the Partners want to retain their employees. You are a seen as a particularly important individual and not just a small cog in a large corporate wheel; or employee #11256. 6 – Working for a building services engineering consultancy also allows you to develop external relationships with architects, surveyors, structural engineer etc. This ensures you are continuing to develop your own networks and develop your commercial awareness. I currently have live roles at Intermediate, Senior, Principal and Associate level with a selection of building services consultancies across London and the SE. #humancapitalsolutions #buildingservices #London

#architect #fireengineer #2in1 I received a comment a few days ago that I have an interesting background: I am both an architect and a fire engineer. I was a bit surprised, because it comes naturally to me :) I was an architect first, but I was more interested in solving technical problems. Then I learned about fire engineering and it became my passion. But why is it good for the job? - Probably the most important is that I typically understand buildings, right from the very beginning of the design process, as I could basically design them myself. I can easily see and interpret things in 3D. - It's much easier to negotiate with an architect when we understand each other from a few words, we have a similar thought process. Of course, it is also easier to explain fire safety requirements to them in this way, and I can also give them some ideas on how to solve them. - During my architectural training, we learned all the disciplines to a certain depth: MEP, electricity, structural engineering, transport, utilities, etc. The architect's task was also to coordinate and reconcile all of these. It is a great help that I can easily understand the plans of all other designers and thus see their fire safety context. - I think that knowledge of materials and structures is one of the basics of fire safety. My knowledge of architecture and civil engineering allows me to give an informed opinion on fire safety characteristics and compliance with testing standards at a detailed level. It helps me a lot to have different but connected knowledge because of my two qualifications. And for an employer, 2 in 1 😊
