Head of the pack at Beauceron Security. We motivate to people make good decisions about technology so they can reduce their cyber risk and thrive in a digital world.

If this is true, and I remain sceptical because it would be among the most sophisticated social engineering attacks I have ever heard of it represents a massive increase in criminal capabilities. We are going to need a two factor authorization, equivalent, for in person, meetings with major decisions to be made. This will require a massive shift in culture and the use of power inside businesses. https://lnkd.in/eA-UX3se

It would need significant computing power and strong AI models to do live deepfakes for multiple participants in a video call without very noticeable lags or facial deformations.

It seems to me that in the end a lot of the same advice given to people to protect against BEC would work in this situation, people just need to make sure they follow those processes before transferring money. At the same time, I'm a bit suspicious of this specific instance since it would be pretty expensive to pull this off with multiple good deepfakes. Wondering if we're going to hear about a much more mundane story that doesn't involve deepfakes in the near future.

I agree with being skeptical. I’m am too. But even if this one was fake, the next one probably wont be. The technology exists and resources needed to carry it off are going to expand. And now major news sources just gave a hint of a plausible new campaign that will work until we train, create processes, and layers of protections against it. Deep Fakes = New Nigerian Prince

Such a wild story. I'm going to need us to establish a safe word for next time you call me. 🤔

Larger amounts have gone out by email and phone attacks: I can see how this could happen. What’s missing is actual process checks and balances. Several layers are needed, especially as the amounts increase.
