On your marks, get set, don’t pet! Friend-shaped? Totally. Down to chill? Not so much. 🚨 All fun aside, bison are not something you want to mess with. You may have heard of "don't pet the fluffy cows" - here is why! ✅ Bison can run up to 35MPH (check out that well-placed sign) and can jump 6 feet ✅ Bison can run faster than horses ✅ Bison may appear chill & friendly but can be very defensive if they feel threatened ✅ If you see a bison with their tail up, stomping the ground, bellowing or huffing - guess what? You are TOO CLOSE! Don't try to take a selfie with a bison. You'll go free-flying, and that's not a good thing. Whether you are visiting Yellowstone National Park or Grand Canyon National Park on the North Rim - remember to always keep your distance and enjoy the bison through a telephoto lens or binoculars! #WildlifeWednesday Learn more about Bison Management here: https://bit.ly/4aevcn1

Raise your hand if you have seen bison that look like this! This yearling heifer is still shedding her winter coat, even in triple-digit temperatures in July. The lighter fur on top is the remnants of her winter coat. The last places bison will shed that thick winter coat is often over their shoulders and back. Wallowing (rolling in the dirt) and rubbing on trees, bushes, or fences can help to pull off that old fur. While there is no scientific backing, the younger animals appear to take longer to shed their first winter coat. Some producers even speculate that the lactating females (mature cows with calves at their side) will shed faster due to the changes in their bodies when they calve. Regardless, it's not uncommon to see the old coat hanging on a bison throughout the summer. Sometimes, it's just a patch or two; other times, as with this heifer, a substantial portion of the coat could still be hanging on while the slick, summer fur is just below the surface. #bison #nationalbison #winterfur #shedding #stillhangingon #rubontreesandbushes #insulation #flyprotection

Crows vs. Ravens: What's the Difference? 🦅 Ever wondered about the differences between crows and ravens? While these birds are often confused, there are some fascinating distinctions between the two! 🦅 Size and Shape: Ravens are generally larger than crows, with a wingspan of up to 4 feet. They also have a more robust beak and a wedge-shaped tail, while crows have a fan-shaped tail. 🔊 Vocalization: Ravens have a deeper, more resonant call, often described as a "croak," while crows produce a higher-pitched "caw." 🪶 Feather Features: Ravens have shaggy throat feathers, called hackles, which are absent in crows. 🌲 Habitat: Ravens are more likely to be found in wilder, remote areas, whereas crows are commonly seen in urban environments. 🧠 Behavior: Both birds are incredibly intelligent, but ravens are known for their acrobatic flight patterns and playful behavior, while crows are more social and often found in larger groups. These are just a few differences that set these fascinating birds apart. Next time you spot one of these black-feathered friends, see if you can tell which one it is!
