The Irish National Ploughing Championships, one of Europe's largest outdoor events, kicks off next week. The event is fuelled by HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) provided and sponsored by Certa Ireland, a DCC Energy business. Proof that even the biggest outdoor events can be powered in a more sustainable manner. #Ploughing2024 #DCCEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyTransition

Sometimes it’s hard to know whether to laugh or cry about things – so this meme brings some humour to the serious situation of the state of the River Seine for the triathlon events in the Paris Olympics and Paralympics. The clean-up operation beforehand cost €1.4 billion and training events just before the Olympic Games commenced had to be cancelled because of pollution. And then the triathlon events scheduled for the Paralympic Games had to be postponed because once again poor water quality meant the conditions were unsafe for athletes. It is because of news stories like this and the ongoing issues with water quality in our rivers and waterways that we would love people to vote for us in the upcoming WWEM (Water, Wastewater & Environmental Monitoring) Awards. Our EM-2 technology is up for most innovative instrument, product or digital solution, but it’s a very strong heat and the competition is impressive! Cast a vote for The CSignum EM-2 and you are casting a vote for cleaner rivers! https://lnkd.in/ewNTbhQi

We are at the mid-way point of the UEFA EURO 2024 cup and England are through to the next round. This tournament is the most sustainable ever with reduced floodlighting, pitch watering and discounted public transport in Germany. Smart tournament schedules will reduce travel for players and fans and all Football stadiums are to run on renewable energy with limits set on electricity usage. Justas Gedvilas, Sports and Entertainment Research Manager at Euromonitor International, said: “UEFA has pledged to make EURO 2024 the most environmentally sustainable European Championship ever. Tournament schedules have been built in a way that minimises travel between venue cities, while public transport users will enjoy discounts and other incentives to decrease dependency on cars and flying. “All stadiums will be run with renewable energy with limits set on electricity usage including reduced floodlighting and pitch watering. Circular economy principles – reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering - will form the basis for waste management practices in and around venues.

Welcome to the PWTAG newsletter, August 2024. PWTAG Annual Conference This year's annual PWTAG conference – Future Proofing Pools – will be face-to-face again and takes place on Thursday 14 November at Loughborough's Holywell Park. It offers an exciting opportunity to consider how our leisure and sports pools are going to move on in the 21st century. The importance of pools to the health of the population cannot be underestimated yet financial pressures could potentially lead to closures and a reduction in this important national asset. The challenges we face include reducing energy consumption to counteract global warming, improving water quality, reducing the reliance on chemical disinfection while keeping bathers safe from infection and updating or replacing ageing pools and associated equipment. Speakers will consider how these challenges are to be addressed in the UK and elsewhere. You will hear: how we might learn from technological changes in the drinking water industry; improvements in pump efficiency; changes in monitoring pool water quality and bather loads; reducing chemical disinfectant levels; and how existing pools and plant have been revitalised for the future. Full details of the conference programme will shortly be available on the PWTAG website along with information on how to register as a participant or sponsor.

The first training session for triathletes at the Paris Olympics was scrapped on Sunday due to pollution in the River Seine, organisers said. "Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that the priority is the health of the athletes. The analysis carried out yesterday in the Seine showed water quality levels that... do not present sufficient guarantees to allow the event to take place," the statement said. Heavy downpours of the sort seen on Friday during the sodden opening ceremony overwhelm the city's sewage system, leading to discharges of untreated effluent into the waterway. French authorities have invested in new water treatment and storage facilities in and around Paris, as well as ensuring that thousands of homes and canal boats without waste-water connections are linked up to the sewerage system. #Water #Pollution #WaterPollution #Environment #WaterQuality #Wastewater #Paris #France #World This content is jointly prepared by ripple2wave and ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd. "We learn best, when we do"... attributed to no-one, and probably never even a phrase. However, definitely how I soak things up. Working for, and with, the DP World Tour over these last 7 months and particularly on their 2023 Sustainability Review has been one of those examples. I've gained practical insight into the subject (and subjectivity) of sustainability 💡 and further insight into the depth of knowledge and experience of my colleagues at GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf 👏 There's more to measure, more to report, more to do and much, much more to shout about, but golf continues to make lengthy strides in building a responsible and sustainable future, and not just for the game. Side note: DP World Tour and AQ Green TeC announced the launch of a new fans emissions tracker today. An interesting step forward in tackling one of the biggest emissions from #events. We have just unveiled the Tour’s “Green Drive” carbon emissions impact report for 2023, which included a deep dive into the carbon footprint of 10 tournaments on our schedule, conducted in collaboration with the experts at the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf. We have a comprehensive baseline to work from as we continue our drive to reduce our emissions by 50% by 2030, and to be net zero carbon by 2040.
