It's honestly a moderate-to-big shift if you're coming from academia. For me, it was like moving to a new country with all the associated shocks from new norms, language, expectations, etc. It was a tough adjustment and sometimes continues to be. Despite all the growing pains, it's been the right move. My team (which you would be joining) is incredible 👏 Quirky, nerdy, supportive, hilarious, and thoughtful. 🫶 The Most Meaningful Moment: Was when I attended our National Keystone Conference to facilitate a focus group on Character and Leadership. I sat with a group of high schoolers and talked to them about what/how their Boys and Girls Club taught them about having good character and being a leader. (Qual data collection stuff) Their GLOW as they spoke to feeling supported, feeling like they belonged, being given chances to explore, being pushed to be better... feeling like they had a family at the Club. Not like "toxic-corporate-we're-a-family-here"-family, but like a teacher who knows you by name, asks about your cat Arnold Palmer, and tells you about an art show you could present at. A caring adult that really sees them and knows them. That was a turning point for me. When I thought: "Ok, this is what I'm supporting. This is what all the data and deliverables I'm bringing all funnel to--creating those moments for those kids so they can rise to meet all the challenges of the world." And that's what this job means to me. Supporting the futures of kids across the country through research in the interest of the public good. In my time here, I've been able to: - Improve our reporting practices - Develop automated systems for reporting - Draw our team's awareness to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility - Highlight the needs of transgender, non-binary, and other gender expansive youth - Learn about dashboard creation tools - See STEM education programs in Clubs that make me wish I had gotten when I was a kid Which is why I post this with confidence and excitement. We may be small, but we continue to work to assemble a body of evidence on the value and impact of Boys & Girls Clubs from every angle. It's the Tetris puzzle that we're building, piece by piece. And we do this while supporting (and challenging) our federation to use social science for good, ask critical questions and use what we learn to shape what we do for young people. To support us in this journey, we’re hiring for an applied researcher/evaluator. The obvious non-negotiables are a commitment to youth development, a collaborative mindset, systems thinking, a hunger to investigate complex questions and that thing that makes people want to trust you and work with you.
