The project team behind LA’s largest homeless housing project gathered to cut the ceremonial ribbon this past Wednesday, June 19, signaling the opening of Weingart Towers – a 19-story, 278-unit structure in LA’s “skid row” neighborhood. This is just one of two towers for the massive project, which features common areas, dog runs, a computer lab, gym and music/art rooms. We love street art!👩🎨 This week our family is enjoying a new city🏙and all of the murals and activation spaces that come with it! 🤸♀️ This got me thinking 🤔 about how engaging with physical spaces adds to the community experience. Interesting initiative preventing those who are newly unhoused from becoming chronically homeless. Of course, interventions are needed across the full spectrum from preventing homelessness altogether to addressing the complex needs of those who are chronically unhoused, in other words primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. This rapid rehousing initiative is so timely as more and more people are struggling with affordability of housing and other basic needs.

While the article is clear that this initiative did not target more complex, chronic cases - that’s okay, because newly unhoused individuals require our support also. Early intervention and preventing chronic homelessness is an important goal in our efforts to reduce and end homelessness. The inability of people to afford to obtain and maintain housing underlies much of our national homelessness problem. Rapid rehousing provides immediate stability, reversing the fortunes of individuals and families and easing their trauma. The results speak for themselves - 400 people housed and 85% have retained that housing. Studies show that rapid rehousing improves housing stability and promotes better long-term outcomes compared to extended stays in shelters. It is a cost-effective strategy that alleviates the burden on emergency services and fosters healthier, more resilient communities. #Homelessness #RapidRehousing #HousingFirst #EndHomelessness

The research is clear: mixed-income housing is key to upLifting Orlando. 📊 70% of young adult Americans said that it was harder for them to afford a home than it was for their parents’ generation. In October 2021, about half of Americans (49%) said this was a major problem where they live—and this is up 10 percentage points from early 2018. Can #AffordableHousing truly knit a community back together? How often do we witness transformative developments that genuinely improve lives? Recently, the James Lewis Jr. Apartments were featured in The Post and Courier (written by Ali Rockett), highlighting the significant impact the community has on the lives of residents and the community on Charleston's East Side. Esther Davis, a resident of the complex, shared her journey from a challenging past to finding peace (and a fresh start) in her new home in Charleston. Her story bears witness to the development’s #CommunityImpact, which provides a sense of ownership and pride. The building, which houses 64 affordable units for those earning 60 percent or below of the Area Median Income, filled up within 30 days of opening — a clear indicator of the critical need for such housing. The city's contribution of $7 million through Affordable Housing and the strategic lease of land at $1 per year underscore a commitment to affordable housing that ensures long-term community benefits. The property's design to revert ownership back to the city after 60 years guarantees that it will remain an affordable haven perpetually. This development, which took nearly 14 years from planning to completion, is not just about building homes but about restoring a fragmented community. The vision of leaders like Councilman James Lewis, Jr., who championed affordable housing to "knit back together" the East Side, is now a living reality.
