Last Friday, DCI sponsored the fifth annual Clean Lake Union Paddle Race fundraiser, and a trio of DCI Jessicas, featuring Jessica Martinez, PE, Jessica Congdon, CPSM, and Jessica K. Lim, P.E., competed together on the water. Clean Lake Union has spent the past decade focused on improving the water quality of the urban Seattle lake, primarily through collaboration with commercial landowners, developers, and government officials to promote the installation of bioretention swales. This year’s paddling event raised a record breaking $65,000 towards their cause! As the Eagles Ice Arena in Spokane celebrates its 50th anniversary, Avista is helping make sure the community ice rink stays around for another 50 years with energy-saving upgrades 💡 Support from Avista’s Commercial Lighting Rebate Program and Named Communities Investment Fund (NCIF) made it possible for the arena to install new LED lights inside and outside the building. The savings are significant. Not only did Avista’s programs cover nearly the entire project cost, but the upgrades will also lead to about $6,000 a year in savings on their energy bill. This means the ice arena can use the money they save to improve other parts of the nonprofit. Plus, LEDs last several years longer than the old fluorescent bulbs they replaced, requiring less maintenance. The lighting upgrade is just one part of the Eagles Ice Arena renovations. Maryland will be soon joining 11 other states and Washington DC in having paint recycling drop-off sites thru PaintCare. According to MD Senator Chris West, “As much as 10% of paint purchased goes unused.” This will help keep all that leftover paint out of landfills and sitting in garages, and instead put it to a better use through recycling and reuse. The program will be funded by a fee collected when paint is purchased. This is instead of charging a fee at the drop-off site as a way to further increase recycling rates. https://lnkd.in/e68tcYzK Great way to make sure leftover paint becomes new paint instead of landfill waste or being illegally dumped. Come on #Pennsylvania, let's get on board this! #circularEconomy #ExtendedProducerResponsibility #EPR #recycling
Households and businesses across Maryland will soon be able to recycle their leftover paint thanks to a new law that was approved by the Maryland Legislature and signed on Thursday, May 9, by Governor Wes Moore. Maryland is the 12th state (in addition to the District of Columbia) to adopt this program, which will be operated by PaintCare, a nonprofit organization created by the paint industry through the American Coatings Association. There’s no limit to what form your #JourneyForWildness can take! 🙌 Anders Jespersen took his journey to the John Muir Way where he rolled up his sleeves and picked up 75kg of litter along the path, while also fundraising for wild places. Anders saw the immediate impact of litter picking and believes it’s one of the simplest ways to help nature. 🔍 He observed that different types of litter accumulate in different areas, highlighting the importance of understanding human behaviour to tackle these issues. You don’t need to climb mountains to fundraise for wild places! Why not hold a sponsored litter pick for your #JourneyForWildness? Get started now 👉 https://bit.ly/3KpI6Dy

Tanka Fund Executive Director, Dawn Sherman, shares why it's important to have funding in order to support our Native rancher partners. Our MISSION is to RETURN BUFFALO TO NATIVE AMERICAN LANDS, LIVES AND ECONOMIES. Tanka Fund is a 501(c)(3) that is Native American-led and staffed. Since 2014, we have been working to provide animals, grants and technical assistance to Native American owned/operated or managed Buffalo ranches that are family or community based. Tanka Fund’s rancher partners now represent more than 1,800 head of Buffalo over 100,000 acres of land. Our 5-year goal is to increase that to 500,000 acres and 5,000 Buffalo or more. We're just 4 days away from the Weston-super-Half in aid of Project Seagrass. Many of the population aren't in the know when it comes to seagrass, which is why we are fundraising and sharing important facts along the way, please give, if you can, to our fundraiser for Project Seagrass (link in comments). Seagrasses only occupy 0.1% of the seafloor yet are responsible for 18% of organic carbon buried in the oceans. Seagrass meadows are able to store carbon in their sediment, essentially ‘locking’ away large amounts of carbon and acting as a carbon store. Help protect seagrass meadows by supporting our fundraiser for Project Seagrass. #fundraising #seagrass #projectseagrass #climatechange #climateaction #climatecrisis #justgiving #halfmarathon
