Ever visualised a future where our buildings - the lofty skyscrapers to the little corner shops -exist symbiotically with nature? It's not just a fanciful notion but an actual reality within our reach. But to turn this vision into a reality, the route we choose is critically important. The construction and design industry has been clutching at models like ASHRAE 90.1 for years, guiding the voyage towards net-zero energy buildings. Yet, this approach barely scrapes the surface of a building's life cycle, akin to using a map that only displays roads, not the terrain that makes the journey captivating. In comes CIBSE TM54 - not merely another technical guideline but a blueprint for a future where buildings reciprocate to the earth and foster sustainable communities. It understands buildings as living entities impacting our health, happiness, and the planet. It all boils down to who steers the process. As we straddle the past and a greener future, the decision is stark. As the lighting industry continues to set new goals to reduce climate change impacts and to promote social equity and justice in manufacturing and in the supply chain, we must continue to consider holistic approaches and ensure that we’re gathering consistent and comparable high-quality data for decision-making. Dare I say that I’m quite proud of our cob products?! They have many usp’s (as well as their justified foothold tackling a climate crisis) and one of my fav’s is that they continue to offer practicality and cost efficiency once installed.
