Breaking: Gareth Southgate Resigns. Probably best for all concerned, but here's why I think plenty of great managers / leaders get unfair criticism 🗣 Much of the good work of a great leader or manager goes unnoticed (in football and in business). It happens behind the scenes. On the other hand: - Winning - Trophies - Tactics These are all highly visible. And so the criticism that Gareth has received on all those points has been (often times) valid. But there are many things he's improved beyond recognition. Problem is, those things are mostly invisible & intangible. Or at least, less visible, because they happen away from the public eye. - Resilience - Team spirit - Psychological safety - Authentic servant leadership - Preparation & professionalism - Improved PR & relations with the media & fans - Completely changing the FA organisational culture - Genuine camaraderie & dare I say it love between players & staff - Turned what was previously our biggest weakness into arguably our greatest strength (penalty shootouts) Perhaps most importantly, he has earned the love, respect and admiration of his players. Because he was always there to protect them when they needed it most. Ultimately, he's left the organisation in a far better place than he found it. Which is more than we could have hoped for back in the dark days of 2016. True, he couldn't quite take this team over the line. But, nobody before him ever got this close consistently. The importance of succession planning. How is it that in a game where so much importance is attached to the business of substitutions/replacements that staunch football fans, pundits, commentators and the person on the street can call for the resignation of the England manager after 8 years at the helm without what seems like a passing thought for who the replacement might be? You wouldn't take off a key player without a sub standing on the line so why do it with a role as key as the England manager? #continuity#substitution#leadership
