on my mind: through observation and experience, I've noticed trends in general/primary care practice toward minimizing exposure and engagement when it comes to areas of #oralpathology #oralmedicine #oncology, gaps in application of knowledge relating to #radiology [including advanced imaging techniques] and gaps in engagement with primary care managers my goal is to look for ways to close these gaps and improve engagement; I see these as matters of #interprofessionalism to do this, I'm looking at courses and elements of our #curriculum and methods in #curriculumdevelopment where we can incorporate both knowledge and practical implication to minimize what has been in my experience a hesitancy and anxiety on the part of the primary care managers [in both #dentistry and #medicine] I'm going to incorporate the role of each dental specialty specifically within their centers of expertise in the following areas [for both adults and children]: head and neck examination oral/oropharyngeal cancer screening biopsy and report interpretation image capture and interpretation laboratory testing and interpretation primary care coordination surgical [oral surgery/ENT] coordination oncology planning and coordination reconstruction/rehabilitation pain management pediatric/geneticist coordination clinical management of systemic disease population health/public health professional/public education policy development research certainly many of the recognized dental specialties will overlap with the roles and responsibilities of the primary care dentist, dental hygienist, and primary [medical] care provider, but I see opportunities to highlight specific expertise that specific specialties bring [in my experience this would include elements such as surgical management by oral surgery/ENT, reconstruction and rehabilitation by prosthodontists/maxillofacial prosthetics, dental public health measures, the role of oral pathology/oral radiology/oral medicine in diagnosis/management/coordination, the role of oral surgery/ENT/orthodontics in craniofacial reconstruction, and the role of periodontics and dental hygiene in both surveillance and management of many oral mucosal diseases] my hope/intent is to introduce learners to each of these communities and their roles, and teach them how to coordinate care

PS and QI Education series topic- 3 #Quality department collaboration with other departments . Imagine a scenario where the head of the surgery department in a hospital is working closely with the quality department. The surgery department head is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the surgical unit, ensuring surgeries are scheduled efficiently, and overseeing the staff. On the other hand, the quality department focuses on maintaining high standards of care, monitoring patient outcomes, and ensuring that the surgical unit follows all necessary protocols and guidelines. Through collaboration, the surgery department head can share insights into operational challenges they face, such as scheduling conflicts or equipment maintenance issues. The quality department can then provide guidance on implementing quality improvement initiatives, conducting audits to identify areas for enhancement, and ensuring that the surgical unit meets regulatory requirements. By working together, they can create a more streamlined process for scheduling surgeries, implement best practices to enhance patient safety, and ultimately improve the overall quality of care provided in the surgical unit. This collaborative effort not only benefits the patients by ensuring they receive top-notch care but also contributes to the hospital's reputation for excellence in healthcare. #collaboration #healthcare #quality #safety #hospitals

If you're planning to schedule a surgery or hospital stay, it's important to be aware of what is known as the "July Effect". A study conducted by Harvard Medical School found that patients at teaching hospitals generally have a lower risk of dying than those at non-teaching hospitals. However, during July, when a new group of trainee doctors begins their residencies, the risk of adverse outcomes for high-risk patients increases. In fact, for patients who come to teaching hospitals with heart attacks, the risk of death in hospitals can increase from 20 percent to 25 percent during July. The study also found that teaching hospitals with the highest percentages of trainees have the greatest difference in outcomes between May and July. It's important to keep this in mind when deciding where to receive medical care, especially if you're considered a high-risk patient. https://lnkd.in/e_KPsZNQ

In August 2024, a retired man experienced severe pain on his left side and required spleen removal. However, during the surgery, the surgeon mistakenly cut into his liver (on the side opposite from the spleen), causing immediate fatal bleeding. While it’s easy to blame the surgeon, the larger issue may lie within the hospital's system and operating room culture. How did no one notice the mistake? Patient safety has become a critical issue over the last 30 years. In January 2023, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that 23.6% of all U.S. hospital admissions resulted in patient harm, and nearly 25% of these incidents were avoidable. Unfortunately, the evidence of improvement is limited. Siobhán (shiv-awn) McHaleán McHale, in her book "The Hive Mind at Work," argues that today's organizations must harness the collective intelligence of their teams. In my consulting practice and research for my book, "Leveraging the Genetics of Leadership," I’ve witnessed this potential firsthand. It’s a vast, untapped resource sitting in the minds of employees who will offer it free of additional charge. Two examples: 1️⃣ Operating room nurses know which surgeons are the best based on how they manage blood loss during surgery. However, few are interested in their observations or perspectives. 2️⃣ A leading medical researcher noted, "I can spend one hour with three nurses and learn enough about patient safety that it will keep me busy for a year working on our patient safety program. " Organizations that leverage the collective experience of their workforce will better navigate today’s complex environments. #leadershipsystem #organizationalculture #patientsafety Acknowledgments: Jim Johnson, Richard Lewine, Noha Al Mohaisen

----🗣️📚 Patient Education📚🗣️ ---- This topic is so crucial to our foundation. A step in our process that we feel cannot be missed, rushed through, or overlooked. Patient education goes beyond the conversations with your doctor at appointments. It goes beyond a google search for "post knee replacement tips". It doesn't start with learning about your procedure a week before your consultation. Patient education starts months before surgery and goes all the way past your twelve month follow up. One way we accomplish this is through our monthly seminars... Seminars: Dr. Molli has performed over 300 free educational seminars for patients and community groups in the past 10 years. In addition to one-on-one education, these group seminars have been mandatory for every patient of Whole Health prior to every procedure we perform. The seminars discuss everything from pre-operative care to days leading up to surgery care, and post-operative care. Questions are answered, discussions had, and factual evidence based learning takes place. Whole Health is extremely dedicated to patient education and have found that it makes a huge positive impact on their patients after surgery. This allows them to have a better understanding of realistic expectations after surgery which yields happier and more satisfied patients.
