As we wrap up National Engineers Week, we’d love to share with you some advice we compiled from the team this week: “Make sure you love what you do, pick a type of engineering that you get excited about. Also, good work ethic and ownership will get you further than any degrees or licenses.” – Jackie Rowland, PE “Once you’re in your engineering classes, reach out to the different local firms for internship opportunities, don’t wait for the companies to advertise an internship opportunity to you. There are several different paths in each engineering discipline and an internship is the best way to preview what a typical day looks like in that particular field.” – Ben Pearson, PE “Make sure you learn as much as you can in school about how to solve problems and think creatively. Once you get to the real world all the variables and assumptions are not given to you, so you need to know how to break down something complex in order to solve the real-world problem.” – Parker Rowland, ME, MBA “If you’re unsure what field of engineering to choose, I highly recommend taking an intro class or other exploratory engineering class if your school offers it. It’s also totally normal to change your field of engineering multiple times before you find the one for you. You just have to find the one that clicks, but once you do, it should be both fun and engaging.” – Sierra Simpson, EI “Don’t be afraid to fail as it will happen many times in your career. Make friends with your co-workers/fellow students and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you are not understanding something.” – Jacob VanLooven, EI #NationalEngineersWeek #RussellRowlandTeam

🧑🔧️ Did you know that nearly 70% of engineering interns receive full-time job offers after their internship? At RTP, we believe in the transformative power of internships—not just for the interns, but for the companies that host them! One of our latest blog posts dives into how engineering firms like ours leverage internships to drive innovation, recruit future leaders, and fulfill corporate social responsibility. Interns bring fresh perspectives and out-of-the-box thinking that can spark solutions to long-standing challenges. For us, internships aren't just a short-term engagement; they’re a long-term investment in talent, culture, and community. As our General Manager of Engineering, Larry Friedline, puts it, “Internships help the intern learn what we do at RTP and helps us learn about the intern and how they may best fit within our team.” Explore our blog post to see how companies that actively shape the intern experience fulfill their responsibility to the next generation while securing a competitive edge in the dynamic engineering landscape: https://lnkd.in/eZacdazz #EngineeringInternships #STEMCareers #InternshipExperience #FutureEngineers #TalentDevelopment #EngineeringLeadership #CorporateResponsibility #WorkforceDevelopment #EngineeringEducation

Are you interested in an internship with the Department of Water Resources? Kazuaki Hatano, a DWR intern is nearing his completion of his internship and has a few words to share of his internship experience! "First of all, I wanted to thank Samantha Blackwood for the opportunity at DWR. I have certainly learned a lot about what the engineers do at the Department of Water Resources. Since I am an engineer major, it has really helped doing this internship. Simple things such as reading engineering maps, what the road to an engineer looks like, and understanding how meetings are held were just a few of the things that I have learned that really helps me stay motivated for continuing with my education in engineering. A lot of this program is more of what you want to get out of it. I always came in the office at least once a week to ask specific questions that gets me a better understanding of what an engineer does. It really helps with my future because not only is this good experience as a first-year student, but it also can really bolster my resume for the next school year. I also have learned a lot about the Delta Conveyance Project and some of the future opportunities that I can find further down the line."

In early August, RISE (Relevant Internships for Successful Employment) college sophomore Scholars delivered presentations about their professional and networking experiences over the summer to the Evanston Scholars community (Evanston Scholars staff, fellow Scholars, & career partners). Here, William Fogue Wambo (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) talks about his internship at Energy CX. What professional opportunity did you gain over summer 2024? WILLIAM: My internship was with Energy CX, an energy sustainability and procurement company. This is a family-owned and managed company with the mission to educate all companies on how to save energy efficiently. My position as a summer intern at Energy CX demanded an abundance of analysis and research within the lead generation and market intelligence departments. I quickly needed to learn how every property, or company used its energy. I determined which companies qualified and were ideal customers for our company. What did you gain from your professional opportunity? WILLIAM: This was my first internship in a corporate setting and this experience solidified my interest in renewable energy. I am interested in renewable energy as a subcategory of civil engineering. This is the area I want to get into, sourcing energy. I want to head down the route of construction management. I want to see how that side plays out and weigh my options from the experiences I gained with Energy CX.
