Trade names or commercial names, meaning the designations that are popularly used in the trade to communicate with the end consumer, are occasionaly regional and translations are typically hard to validate. That is the case of “crisólita” or “crisólito”, as it was historically spelt in Portuguese both in Portugal and Brazil. This antique trade name, considered a misnomer today, corresponds to the greenish-yellow chrysoberyl, a gem mineral that was named after its transparency and colour, from the Greek, “chrysos”, “gold”, and berullos, “transparency”. Translating the original Portuguese name to English simply as “chrysolite” created confusion since it meant another gemstone, peridot, hence the historical expression “oriental chrysolite” to differentiate it. Chrysoberyl became very popular in Portuguese and Brazilian jewellery on the last third of the 1700s, especially in the early 1800s following the discovery of significant quantities of fine gem-quality material in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This mineral is better known for alexandrite (the colour-changing variety), the mint-green vanadium-bearing variety and, of course, for its cat's eye varieties. In the images, a selection of very typical sets of late-1700s to early-1800s silver jewellery fully set with reflective foil-backed greenish-yellow chrysoberyls being fine examples of the historical use of this gem variety in Portuguese jewellery. The Most Enigmatic History Among the Largest Diamonds? 🍐 👆 The Spoonmaker’s Diamond (Kaşıkçı Diamond), displayed in the Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, is an iconic gem surrounded by controversy and contradictions, making it perhaps the most enigmatic among the world's largest diamonds. 👉 What is known for certain is that the Spoonmaker’s Diamond is an 86-carat, G-colour, VS1 clarity stone with an intriguing shape and medium blue fluorescence under long-wave UV light. 👆 Coincidentally, a G-colour, VS1 clarity, pear-shaped diamond, but much larger at 228.31 carats, mined and polished in South Africa around 2000 and named “The Rock”, is the largest colourless diamond ever sold at auction and the largest existing D-Z colour pear-shaped diamond ever graded by GIA (Gemological Institute of America). 🙌 Unlike the 49 surrounding diamonds-cut in old-european and old-mine, or so-called Mazarin or Peruzzi cut, the Spoonmaker’s Diamond itself features an innovative fantasy flat rose cut. To enhance its fire (dispersion) and create the illusion of greater size, the diamond is mounted on lustrous tin foil and backed with a thin gold plate to obscure the setting, which was hidden beneath the gem. 🫶 As for its history, the origin of the Spoonmaker’s Diamond remains a mystery. Many stories have been told about how it entered the Ottoman treasury. One tale claims a fisherman in 1669 unknowingly traded the diamond for three spoons, another suggests it was a gift from Captain Camus, the lover of Napoleon Bonaparte’s mother, Letizia Ramolino, while yet another insists it is the same gem as the Pigot Diamond. All these narratives are marked by contradictions and a lack of concrete evidence, leaving the true story behind the Spoonmaker’s Diamond shrouded in mystery. 📷 The Spoonmaker’s Diamond (Kaşıkçı Diamond) © Topkapı Palace Museum, Istanbul, Turkey. #Diamonds #DiamondHistory #Jewellery #HeritageJewellery #CulturalHeritage

🌟 Discover Kintsugi, the Japanese art of embracing imperfections! 🌟 Kintsugi, meaning "golden repair" in Japanese, is a captivating art form that involves repairing broken ceramics or porcelain using a mixture of resin and precious metal powders like gold, silver, or platinum. Rather than discarding or hiding the damage, Kintsugi celebrates the cracks, turning them into a thing of beauty. More than just a technical process, Kintsugi embodies a philosophical and aesthetic practice deeply rooted in appreciating imperfections. Traditionally, Kintsugi masters delicately piece together shards of broken pottery, using resin as adhesive. Then, they fill the cracks with a blend of precious metal powder. This meticulous technique, originating in the 15th century, is performed with utmost care and respect for the object being repaired. Philosophically, Kintsugi promotes the concept of wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic principle valuing impermanence and flaws. Instead of shame or concealment, Kintsugi highlights imperfections as part of an object's narrative. It underscores the notion that scars and imperfections are part of life and should be embraced and revered. In essence, Kintsugi is not just about fixing objects; it's a profound reflection on the passage of time and the acceptance of imperfection as an integral part of beauty. ✨ #Kintsugi #JapaneseArt #japan

A client asked me to find him a beautiful and big Paraiba Tourmaline stone: being a collector, he is well aware of all gems’ values. I showed him this incredible 20ct cushion cut stone, and as expected he went crazy about it. Then he asked “What’s the country of origin?” So I told him it’s from Mozambique: to which he responded “No, I only want a genuine brazilian Paraiba!”. Back to the search. To be honest, while I do understand the value of provenance, and that an emerald from Muzo is generally considered to be better than any other; and that a Paraiba tourmaline should be from …Paraiba, Brazil; as a designer, I am getting sick of the excessive categorizing. A beautiful Emerald is a beautiful Emerald and an incredible Ruby will always be an incredible Ruby: geolocically or even chemically a Ruby is a Ruby, and what makes the difference is the color and the quality! This Paraiba is a beautiful stone, with a mesmerizing color, of a rare size and quality: once set in a gorgeous piece of jewelry, the woman wearing it will be admired by all and feel like a real Queen. And that’s all that matters! Hence, I will keep looking at gems for what they are without demanding they speak to me in Portuguese rather than Makhuwa ! #gemstones #gems #preciousstones #highjewelry #paraiba #tourmalines

This colourful 17th century pendant gathers elements that illustrate the trends in jewellery of that period. The reverse of this piece is superbly decorated with polychrome enamel (in white and blue) whereas in the front enamels are an important part but not dominant. Coloured gemstones in gold settings were abundant and here we see a few, mostly emeralds, of probable Colombian origin, and rubies, of probable Burmese origin. The cameo of a young lady in devout posture is carved in agate (banded chalcedony). Red spinel is also represented as the largest of the red-coloured gemstones set on a decoration above the cameo. The use of red spinel is well documented in Iberian jewellery since the 16th century under two trade names: ballas / ballas rubies (or balas and other similar orthographies) or simply as ruby-spinels (“rubi espinela”). This is important gem set pendants of the 1600s can be visited at the @Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro in the beautiful historical centre of the city of Coimbra, Portugal. If the history and stories around the evolution of gemstones in jewellery is something you are interested in, it might be worth considering extra education at ruigalopim.com Photo © Museu Nacional Machado Castro / Museus e Monumentos de Portugal EPE #jewelry #antiques #luxury #gemstones #history
