A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Several type of offshore structures such as FSO/FPSO and SBM/CALM buoys utilize anchor chains to hold in position. It is common to see multiple anchor chains for each structures. Not small chain like bicycle chain. A single link chain for these structures can be almost 1m long and weight at few hundreds kilogram. A broken anchor chain is no good. It doesn't serve its purpose. Later the FSO or SBM buoy would float away if all anchor chains fails. Hence it is important to check the condition of the chain links at the high stress area & corrosion is mostly expected. The subsea inspection performed on the anchor chain are: ⚠ Visual Inspection ⚠ Marine Growth cleaning of chain links at selected location ⚠ Selected Chain Links Wear measurement to record its current dimension to compare with as-built data ⚠ Measurement of corrosion pitting if observed ⚠ CP measurement ⚠ Chain angle measurement These data would be utilize for analysis and understand where is the weakest link, so the necessary remediation work can be performed if necessary.
