Last weekend, we hosted an exciting family STEM workshop for our colleagues and their children with a special focus on exploring machine learning technology to build smart recycling bin. They used micro:bits, sensors and simple materials to build prototypes of intelligent waste receptacles and worked together to learn the basics of coding and electronics. It was inspiring to see the creativity and problem-solving skills as the families brought their environmentally-friendly ideas to life. The workshop provided a valuable hands-on learning opportunity that nurtures STEM education and sustainable innovation for the next generation. #Deacons #WorkingFamilies #ESG #Environmental #STEM #Innovation #Education #STEMEducation #FamilySTEMWorkshop

University of Illinois Extension Program ACES (Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences) 4-H, AmeriCorps alum, Former Peace Corps Volunteer and Army Medic. Current Rotarian. Redbird and Blue Demon.
At my university sponsor in Illinois…the “A” in STEAM can also stand for AGRICULTURE. It’s fascinating to hear about all the AI related developments in the world of Agriculture including AI greenhouse robots, driverless tractors and iOt-powered drones for a state-of-the art crop forecast, the optimization of labor and early detection of pests. But first… is it STEM, STEAM or STREAM? Let’s take STEM. Almost everyone agrees that the acronym STEM stands for Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics. STEM disciplines are said to foster critical-thinking skills and problem-solving skills helping find creative solutions to challenging problems. STEM used to be the only game in town…the “gold standard”. Should educators use STEM, STEAM or STREAM? For most educators…the “A” in STEAM is for ART. Yet, that being said, there is no hard and fast rule on what that A stands for. Just like an art curator at the Louvre in Paris…if 30 people look at the Mona Lisa…and you’ll get 30 different, unique takes on Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile. The “R” in STREAM can stand for READING, RELIGION or ROBOTICS. Seems like every grade school, high school or institution for higher learning is going to interpret that “A” or “R” to suit their own curriculum. I work at the only land grant university in Illinois. Our university sponsor also happens to have a ROBOTICS office nearby. I like STEAM. I have watched kids be totally engaged while while making “dancing popcorn” with baking soda and cooking oil. I have watched kids be totally engaged make colorful helicopters, tulips and diamonds out of colorful rubber bands on their geoboards. Next week we will make alarms, bird noises and sing “happy birthday” via snap circuits. While STEM, STEAM and STREAM remain open to interpretation by schools and educators alike, we all can agree on the immense benefits for problem-solving skills, critical-thinking skills and creativity. #stemcareers #stemwomen #agriculturalinnovation #stream #steameducation #roboticsforkids #artificialintelligencetechnology

Co-Founder at Innovate Technology and Robotics Academy. Award winning Robotics Competition Coach and Mentor. FIRST, VEX, ASIA PAC, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COACH. Robotics Educator in the classroom.
Let’s talk about exasperating things that happen in the classroom. Hardware and software integration. Sometimes things happen and more time is needed to troubleshoot the issue and while that happens, the STEM teacher can be under pressure to solve the problem as well as manage the class and even classroom expectations. It is something that happens to us occasionally and we find that we have to become quick thinkers and have other activities for students to do while this is being sorted out. That’s why it is good to have open conversations about the STEM classroom to students and parents. Let them know that these things that occur are not abnormal but normal from time to time. Technology is not perfect. There will be issues. There will be harder and better days. It is all part of the problem solving we talk about when we say STEM. Open and honest conversations around STEM learning are what we need. #innovatetechacademy #conversation #stem #steam #learning #students #technology #techeducation #classroom Gary Gopinathan Shanna Gopinathan Innovate Technology & Robotics Academy
