Previously we looked at the connection between the music industry and social issues, including but not limited to: abortion, queer community, criminalization of addiction, as well as climate change. Now a new case in the Supreme Court could be threatening environmental sustainability. Should Gorsuch's personal interests in the case be enough to recuse himself from it? Could Anschutz profit off these decisions? Question where the money flows with me in this reflection of how entertainment keeps people distracted from what the powers at be are doing right in front of us. https://lnkd.in/g8nJykm2

Rogers, M. L. (2015). David Walker and the Political Power of the Appeal. Political Theory, 43(2), 208-233. https://lnkd.in/gKXURMEd Abstract: David Walker’s famous 1829 Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World expresses a puzzle at the very outset. What are we to make of the use of “Citizens” in the title given the denial of political rights to African Americans? This essay argues that the pamphlet relies on the cultural and linguistic norms associated with the term appeal to call into existence the political standing of black folks. Walker’s use of citizen does not need to rely on a precognitive legal relationship precisely because it is the practice of judging that illuminates one’s political, indeed, citizenly standing. Properly understood, the Appeal aspires to transform blacks and whites, and when it informs the prophetic dimension of the text, it tilts the entire pamphlet in a democratic direction. This is the political power of the pamphlet; it exemplifies the call-and-response logic of democratic self-governance. #Alkebulan #Rise #Ubuntu

🌟 Truth and Justice: A Powerful Reminder 🌟 📽️ Inspired by "Please Leave My Lecture Room" - Watch the video below 📽️ "Justice is not a spectator sport. If we don't help bring about justice, one day we may face injustice with no one there to stand for us." In a world where silence can be mistaken for consent, standing up for what’s right isn’t just noble – it’s necessary. When we fail to act against injustice, we risk a future where no one stands up for us. Let’s be the voices for those who cannot speak and the strength for those who cannot stand. Together, we can create a world where justice prevails, and truth is the guiding light. ✊🏽 Stand for truth. Fight for justice. ✊🏽 #JusticeForAll #StandUp #TruthAndJustice #TogetherWeCan #InspireChange ---

I talked to a number of people after the events last week that we saw in the UK, around racist and violent comments regarding Diane Abbott. The attack, and for many the inadequacy of the reaction around the racist comments, have a real impact on people. We set ourselves up at C4 to stand against racism, to be anti-racist. That means we need to think about how we show up as an organisation. For a lot of my colleagues last week was very tough. Particularly for Black women who encounter this type of “misogynoir” in their daily personal and professional lives. It has made me think about what I need to do to be an ally. What are the ways that allies let our Black colleagues feel seen and safe in these moments; how do we educate ourselves to better recognise racist behaviour and what we can do to counter it; how do we ensure that our own behaviours are sensitive to the ways in which Black women can be dehumanised or their contributions devalued. It is always worth exploring how one can improve even if we might not always get it right. I had emailed Channel 4 at the start of the week talking about faith and the complexity of being comfortable with views about Israel-Gaza and it being so hard to manage our identities and opinions whilst the conflict goes on. For me it’s worth just thinking about how we can help each other as colleagues and I hope all feel safe and respected in our buildings. https://lnkd.in/e4SizQ9x

Really interesting to see the way people, organisations and institutions invoke anti-racism and black intellect when they want to maintain incompetence. They are way less interested in black intellect and anti-racism when it doesn’t serve their purposes. Way less interested when black students are being failed daily on our campuses because of racism. Even more interesting are the black colleagues who allow themselves to be used with the view that they are being represented. They don’t care on any other day. Why would they care today? Where ARE they when black women are being silenced in the workplace, making complaints, and getting terminated? Where are they when black staff are getting ignored every possible way for academic promotion? Where are they when black staff report bullying and racialised discrimination in the workplace and said black staff had to leave? Being anti-racist isn’t always inclusive… “You really wanna know?)
