Oscar Bloomfield's #PhD #research explores how cinema can highlight the fundamental essences of the human condition which may have become lost to the frantic pace of modern life. Oscar is a PhD candidate at the School of #Communication and #Creative Arts at Deakin's Faculty of #Arts and #Education. 'In the future, I'm definitely excited to continue strengthening my own personal relationship with #cinema, and its philosophical particularities, and I'm definitely also looking at strengthening my understanding of how cinema taps into what it means to be human', says Oscar. Cinema is the most American art form - a product of the economic, social, and technological perfect storm that occurred in this country in the early 20th century. For decades, we built art deco shrines to this art form in nearly every city, town, and village which Americans attended almost as much as they attended church. One of the Queensmen brothers is compiling a film library, a succinct and distinguished collection of the best and most important films ever made - films that reveal a truth about the human experience and display it for its audience to grasp. What movies would you add to your own film library?

We often think of films as little more than entertainment to be enjoyed leisurely. To the passive viewer, cinema is nothing more than plot, characters, and movie stars. We even judge a film’s success with a simple “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” scale. The goal of Humanities 101: Art and the History of the Motion Picture is to transcend these simplistic notions of film and arrive at an understanding of the complex history and artistry of film.
