Texans should adopt this holiday season to avoid supporting and endorsing out-of-state puppy mills that supply pet stores and sell pets online. What if you want a purebred? The purebred dog you are looking for might be at your local shelter. Did you know that 25% to 30% of dogs in shelters are purebreds? By adopting a pet from your local shelter or rescue, you will free up space for another homeless animal to have the opportunity to find a forever home and relieve the pressure on shelters and rescues. https://lnkd.in/gGYnbMwB

"The human-animal bond is the #1 reason I do this job. I love reuniting people with their beloved pets," says Pasco County Animal Services pet reunification specialist Carey King-Agin. "Of course it also saves kennel space, and it saves the county money."   When Pasco County started their program to increase reclaims, they were determined to get rid of the barriers they saw most frequently standing in the way of pets being reunited with their families:   💵 Fees: The county requires certain fees, but other fees (like boarding and reclaim fees) are at the discretion of the shelter, and staff doesn't let fees stand in the way of getting pets back home.   🚐 Transportation: Carey can drive a county vehicle to take pets back home when needed.   🫣 Fear: A big part of their campaign was constant communication about their lost and found efforts and sharing happy reunification stories on social and traditional media, to show pet parents that shelter staff isn't scary and they want pets to get back to their families.   Their efforts have paid off, resulting in a 16.9% increase in Return to Home rate for stray dogs! 🎉   Want to level up your Return to Home efforts? While catching up on this year's National Dog Show, I was thrilled to see they had recognized the Women's Animal Center (https://lnkd.in/eAh5bzUg) for their work with survivors of domestic violence! While shelters are required to take in service animals, many survivors are told they must leave their pets, which can exacerbate feelings of grief, loneliness, and isolation during a tumultuous time. Please note pet cleaning is costly and behavior can be unpredictable. I do not fault shelters who do not have the capacity to take in pets. Rather, I wish to bring awareness to the issue so that we can be better equipped to help when needed! Reflecting on the question of whether individuals experiencing homelessness should have pets. Veterinarians, who have served diverse clients, affirm that those unsheltered often form profound bonds with their animal companions, serving as sources of companionship, motivation, hope, and protection. Regardless of socioeconomic status, the care and devotion they exhibit toward their pets are remarkable. While there may be exceptions of neglect, this transcends all social classes. Every animal deserves love, regardless of material possessions. Pets value affection over expensive beds or toys; they prioritize being fed and safe. Let's not let biases affect our love for animals. The human-animal bond should extend beyond wealth. In today's uncertain world, anyone could face homelessness. Shelter, family, and friends are privileges. Instead of judging by shelter quality, let's advocate for care in every setting. Everyone, including animals, deserves compassion. Pets are family. #EmbraceCompassion #PetsAreFamily"

Losing a pet is heartbreaking. The first Saturday in April is Every Day is Tag Day, a nationwide effort created by American Humane to prevent the heartache of losing a pet. DID YOU KNOW? Approximately 10 million companion animals wander away from home each year. Millions end up in shelters. Tragically, only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats in shelters shelters without ID tags or microchips are reunited with their guardians. To Make Every Day Tag Day: > Make sure your pet always wears a collar with a current ID tag, rabies tag, and city/county license. Include a contact name, address, and daytime and evening phone numbers on their ID tag. > Keep your pet’s licenses, ID tag, and microchip current. Make sure to update the tag if you change your address or phone numbers. Microchips add an additional layer of protection in the event the pet's collar and/or tag fall off or are removed. > When moving or traveling, place a temporary tag on your pet with the phone number of someone who knows how to reach you. > Remember that even indoor pets need tags.
