Staples did a survey of their US workers and concluded that 62% of employees would accept a lower salary in exchange for better benefits. However, that was dependent on demographics. Employees with families were zoned in on better benefits and more work/life balance. Single employees still preferred a better salary. But benefits are a key element in employee retention. According to a survey last fall conducted by a large HR software company, more than half of employees said they would stay with their current company because of benefits. The valued benefits by employees? In addition to the core benefits (health insurance, paid time off, vision/dental, retirement, life insurance and short/long term disability - source Zenefits), people are seeking remote work options, flexible hours, professional development and fitness/ wellness programs. According to an article by Forbes Advisor, 30% of 18-41-year-olds are loving pet insurance. So what should you offer to entice the best employees? Look at the demographics of the people you are seeking to draw to your company. Consider polling or conducting a focus groups of current employees and executives to understand what benefits are most valued. Consider industry standards and benchmarks. Assess your company’s budget and financial capabilities. Additionally, you can consult with HR professionals or benefits specialists to understand legal requirements and best practices. I’m burying the lead here, but I hope you’re still with me. Perhaps one of the most critical practices you can take to attract top candidates is to share your benefits package during the interview process. Often employers wait until the on-boarding process to have this discussion. But if you have a great benefits package, flaunt it! It can be a great tool to attract the best and the brightest. ------------ Deanna Nesbit & Associates is a certified woman-owned business that provides executive-level recruiting and HR services. The war on talent has had a tremendous impact on lifestyle benefits in 2023, requiring employers to get creative and adjust their offerings to meet the needs of their diverse workforce and talent pool. A recent study by Alegeus found that only 29% of employees say their employer perks are fully aligned with their lifestyle. How can we make sure that our employee benefits program stays competitive? First we need to #understand #employee #needs so regularly we will assess our employees’ preferences and gather feedback to identify gaps in our benefits offerings. Also we need to use our budget wisely and that through #balancing #cost-#effectiveness with the value provided by benefits. Another very important note from my point of view is: designing with Experts; we need to collaborate with HR professionals to design a comprehensive program. Tailor benefits to accommodate different demographics and life stages and finally evaluate and adapt
