The latest Jackson-Stops annual Waterside Review shows high end demand is, in effect, creating new waterside plots. Our latest review of the market for properties attractively close to lakes, rivers and the sea, has reasserted the tremendous premium that a good waterside property can command (96% in the case of Brighton seafront houses) and the growing appreciation of estuary locations, which are often more protected and interesting. It has also highlighted how some areas, such as the north Norfolk coast, are so defined by the sea, that the ‘coastal premium’ extends far inland. Read more about our research, and discover our waterside homes for sale https://lnkd.in/ex5yxWTH #watersideproperty #coastalproperty #cost #property #jacksonstopsresearch #propertyexperts #lakesideproperty #riversideproperty #beachproperty #jacksonstops

You are all welcome to attend to next Hunter Living Histories – 1 July 2024 Showcase on Public Housing & Planning. (When & Where: 1 July 2024 1pm-2:30pm Auchmuty Library L326 or zoom link on site page) Heritage and environmental groups are expressing concern at the housing crisis. Everyone wants something done about getting people into affordable and public housing but are worried that the mad rush is trashing proper planning; they simply fear that replacing poor planning (that got us into this housing mess) is not going to be solved by more poor planning rushed through to get us out of it. The aim of the discussion is to understand how public/affordable housing once worked, why it went belly up, and what we need to do to get it back on track. Guest presenter is Mr Joe Flood. Joe Flood is a policy, data analyst and mathematician. Flood worked in CSIRO from 1977 to 1993, where he conducted about 25 research projects for every level of government in Australia during 1984-93. His research contributed to several major changes in Australia’s housing policy. We will also have University of Newcastle students working on real world housing issues such as the Broadmeadow Project. So join in by zoom or in person. All welcome and FREE https://lnkd.in/eQCdphc9 Marilla North #housingpolicy #publichousing #costoflivingcrisis #architecture #BroadmeadowProject #affordablehousing

Red Castle overlooking Lunan Bay in Angus is one of Scotland's many endangered historic sites. Between the soft Old Red Sandstone from which it is built and the progressive erosion by the adjacent Lunan Water of the great sand and gravel mound on which its stands, its future is precarious. Large sections of the late 15th-century great tower that dominates the remaining ruin collapsed in the 1990s, leaving major overhanging sections of masonry on its NE side - testimony to the strength of the medieval mortar! The NW corner of the tower stands right on the brink of the eroded face overlooking the river, which is dynamic and spate-prone, even more so in this period of intensified rainfall and storm events. Although described in 1999 as 'in imminent danger of collapse', the tower has proven more resilient than expected but the stresses within the remaining structure are unpredictable and it is now isolated by security fencing. While it would be wonderful in an ideal world to 'do something' to conserve this beautiful ruin - and the multitude of similar sites around the country - the more pragmatic question in these cash-strapped times is how do we ensure that the remains are recorded fully before they collapse further to enable future, high-quality research? Is this the time to marshal 'citizen science' behind a recording project akin to the splendid Scotland's Rural Past initiative, that did so much to transform our knowledge and understanding of deserted rural settlements? Can we organise a 'MacGibbon and Ross for the 21st Century' that captures the current state of Scotland's castles? That, rather than trying to hold back the tide of time at places like Red Castle, might be a more useful and effective way of supporting and advancing community ownership of local heritage, strengthening our understanding of these sites, and deepening our knowledge of their histories.

A passion of mine. How we can share the experience and story of our nation. Engage inclusively, and preserve as much as we can for our future generations? It would be great if funds were available to fix and make safe all out structures and objects but plainly it isn’t. But we can preserve them visually and hand over a legacy for others in the future? It’s not hard to do, just use the power and curiosity of the people. There are so many tools available for us to do this now that cost a few pounds. What we do need is a place to put all the information we could be capturing that belongs to all of us, to share and use. Wither you are a researcher, conservator or just curious. I have a dream… and a practical solution if anyone wants to talk about this?
