A interesting review and summary of dad's last book. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it, Jules Lauve.
A thorough, thoughtful review by Arnold Aronson of Richard Pilbrow’s epic tome, “A Sense of Theatre.” A must read for anyone involved in the performing arts and building spaces for them. However, and unfortunately, the controversial pull-quote title of the review and Mr. Aronson's final assessment does not, in my opinion, accurately reflect Mr. Pilbrow's final assertion which was neither black-and-white nor monolithic: "Sixty years of subsequent development have moved the goalposts. The success of the fringe and intimate theatre, changes in society, and in the all-embracing media world we inhabit, have changed our theatre. Intimacy and inter-audience connection has assumed an ever greater importance. Lasdun’s National Theatre is today a magnificent and very popular building. The National Theatre Company is internationally renowned." And: "But the center of this magnificent building, the two main auditoria, where actor and audience meet, offer both unprecedented opportunity and challenge. The smaller Dorfman continues a place of vibrant, lively, intimate, action. Might the two large houses, the Olivier and Lyttelton, one day be transformed to become places that more readily spring to vibrant life? We will see." You can buy the book at: https://lnkd.in/ebiaGYPd Or, at your local bookshop.

Check out my latest blog, and learn about the striking similarities between pitching a concept and performing Off-Broadway!
Over the summer, one of our ACDs performed in an Off-Broadway show. Turns out there's a fair amount of crossover between agency life and the theatre. Read all about it in this enlightening and entertaining addition to our blog. https://lnkd.in/eB8irdCd

'A behind the scenes look at theatre investment' is the title of an article in Spear's Magazine by Suzanne Elliott. It is insightful and well worth reading for anyone interested in taking the plunge in investing in a stage play or musical. One stand-out quote is this, "The arts and culture industry is worth £10.8 billion a year to the UK economy and a whopping $876.7 billion in the US and nearly all producers – even big names on Broadway and the West End – require private investments to help raise the curtain." https://lnkd.in/gngbDjvV #theatre #theatreinvestment #musicals #culture #wealthmanagement

There can be so much "gloom and doom" in our field, it is important to shine the spotlight on what is working. Thirty years ago, Robert Brustein warned the field of becoming McTheatre - if everyone produces the same thing, we run the risk of destroying our hyperlocal importance. The companies in this article illustrate his foresight.
Interesting article about some of the positive trends emerging in the theatre field.

Last month marked a year of working with Peacock Players, and I'm so glad this article shines a light on how impactful it's been and continues to be. Youth theater isn't about just singing, acting, dancing, or the criminally underrated backstage magicians - it teaches lifelong lessons like collaboration, problem-solving, and making space for others, skills you can use in southern New Hampshire, on Broadway, and everywhere in between! #ProudlyPeacock https://lnkd.in/ekKV5v6g

🎭 The West End is enjoying a theatre revival. Can Broadway keep up? A brilliant deep dive by Daniel Thomas in the Financial Times explores the decisive shift in the balance of power between London and New York as contenders for the title of world capital of theatre. Post-pandemic, London has staged an extraordinary comeback, fuelled by outstanding productions and record-breaking audience numbers. The higher rate of Theatre Tax Relief has also played a crucial role in supporting this resurgence. Nevertheless, challenges persist. Sluggish economic growth and rising labour costs, partly due to increases in employers' national insurance, remain hurdles for the industry to overcome. Yet as I note in the article, “The UK is the best place in the world to make and to see theatre, and a huge part of that and its strength is in the diversity of offering. Not every show is for everyone, but there is a show for everyone.” Read for free via the link below: https://lnkd.in/eJhxSEry
