Child support is a court-ordered financial responsibility designed to cover a child's essential needs such as housing, sustenance, and health care. While typically provided until the child turns 18, certain conditions can extend this obligation. Understanding these legal requirements is crucial for both custodial and non-custodial parents. Thank you Victorian Council of Social Services for addressing the pain points for care this #worldcareday. For carer households where day to day financial pressures are impacting lives and placements of children and young people, an increase to the Victorian care allowance rate and other financial supports to reach parity with other states in Australia, is urgent and critical. The state by state comparisons show Victoria is out of touch and leaving carers with unsustainable levels of financial responsibility to provide secure and quality care to the children and young people of Victoria. https://lnkd.in/gCkw-A26
Victoria’s child and family services system continues to come under significant and sustained pressure. Service providers – committed to supporting Victoria’s most at-risk children, young people, families and carers, and their workers – are working in an increasingly challenging environment. To ensure that Victoria’s children and their families are kept safe and well, Victoria must continue to implement policies and take steps to reduce the demands on the child and family services system, address the overrepresentation of First Nations families in the child protection system, and ease the financial burden on foster and kinship carers. At Directorate Alternative Care, I often meet parents who were once children in the care system, some of whom I encountered during my time working in child protection. It raises a critical question: does the fact that they grew up in our care system and now have children in care themselves suggest that the system failed them? Nowadays we moved more towards community home settings, where minors in care are given the opportunity to live in a family like environment. At present DAC hosts 62 minors and young people in our ten homes and two after care settings. We remain committed to de-institutionalisation, focusing on individual care plans tailored to each child’s needs. But beyond that, we must work harder to strengthen their skills, foster empathy, build self-awareness, and uphold their dignity. It's not just about care—it's about equipping them for life. #ChildProtection #DeInstitutionalisation #Empathy #Dignity #SocialWork #CareTransformation
