It helps create certainty in your abilities by picturing successful actions in detail. Body language, confidence, and energy play key roles in this exercise. Adding Incantations to timelining boosts the power of affirmations, enhancing confidence by changing both words and physiology. Embody what you say with intensity to reprogram your mind effectively. Most of us have been raised believing that “I think therefore I am”, – identifying with our thoughts and our minds rather than our bodies and emotions. As a result, often,  we pay very little attention to what’s happening in our bodies until we’re in pain.  But this separation of the mind and body - with the mind placed on a pedestal - is simply not  an accurate picture of reality. How we perceive and respond to the reality we inhabit and how we experience ourselves and the world around us is shaped by our thoughts, emotions and bodily senses.  At a very basic level we experience the world first through our bodies - primarily when our senses see, hear, taste, feel the world around us - and those signals are interpreted by our autonomic nervous system, which then signals the brain. Experts in neuroscience and nervous system regulation say “Stories follow state” not the other way around. So our nervous system state actually informs the kinds of thoughts we are having at any given moment. The first thing we assess in any situation at a nervous system level is our safety. Am I safe or not is the number one question it aims to answer at any given moment. Anxiety, overwhelm, people pleasing, procrastinating, self censoring, losing your temper, impatience are all responses of the nervous system under threat. How is this relevant to leadership? Well if our nervous system is constantly behaving as if we were under threat then research shows that creativity, problem solving, calm, clarity  are simply out of reach for us. And those are pretty crucial qualities to be able to access as a leader. So if we want to transform our leadership capacities we need to start in the body, with our nervous system. But why would our nervous system believe that we are under threat in the first place? And how do we help it to stop believing that? Before you 'flip your lid' the next time, how often are you training the regulation of your pre-frontal cortex? Self regulation happens when you understand that you can turn up and down your emotional response but it first starts with awareness that you have some control. Your pre-frontal cortex is often referred to your 'executive function', that part of your brain that makes all the good decisions. OK, not every decision your PFC makes is good, especially those when you are younger. Especially those as a teenager and what you wear (I am guilty of some horrible fashion disasters in the name of 'being cool') I like to think of your PFC as your trusted board of directors that are looking after you. Like all things in life your emotions will rise and fall just like your levels of stress and clarity of decision making. That's why it is a practice. Self-regulation is not a 'one time' learning. It is a constant process of evolution as you increase your emotional intelligence. It takes practice but is so worth it in the long run. Now, if only I could forget those horrible fashion mistakes of the 80's and early 90's!!! Remember, if you're not training your brain, someone else is doing it for you.
