When the Nottingham Counselling Service (NCS) therapists share how they’ve changed lives and get people through the toughest of times, it’s such a privilege. Hearing about a person’s journey whose hit a place of deep despair, and is enabled to come through it with the aid of talking therapies. This is often a life line and a life changing experience. As we emerge into another year it’s a good opportunity to take time to reflect and cherish. Know that difficult moments can be temporary and help is out there. Mullan Institute researcher and Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity scholar, Samantha Meeker, is presenting research on vicarious trauma among emergency response medical professionals at #APHA2023. "While vicarious trauma is an occupational challenge for emergency medical response professionals, hearing about the trauma experienced by those they serve does not have to result in vicarious traumatization or further manifestations on psychological, social, or occupational wellness." This work was done while Samantha was at the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research at Northeastern University. Concepts like compassion satisfaction, vicarious resilience, and transformation will be explored as well as the risks and protective factors connected with secondary stress injuries. Attendees participate in activities to explore and learn individual techniques to lessen the effects of secondary stress injuries on providers' well-being across various domains. A trauma-informed approach to care acknowledges that health care organizations and care teams need to have a complete picture of a patient’s life situation — past and present — in order to provide effective health care services with a healing orientation. Adopting trauma-informed practices can potentially improve patient engagement, treatment adherence, and health outcomes, as well as provider and staff wellness. The relationship between trauma and addiction is complex, and without the necessary support, trying to understand the relationship between the two can be overwhelming. If someone has experienced traumatic events, they are significantly more likely to develop an alcohol or substance use disorder. For instance, studies have found that substance use developed following trauma exposure (25% – 76%) or the onset of PTSD ( 4% – 59%) in a high proportion of teens with substance use disorder. This is because individuals may turn to substances or unhealthy behaviors as a coping mechanism to numb emotional pain or escape distressing memories. For people with persistent pain, it can be hard to start and stick to engaging in physical activity. There might be many hindrances but social factors, like societal expectations, social support and social control, may play a significant role. Clinicians can optimise their prescription of exercise and physical activity for individuals with persistent pain by recognising and harnessing social support around the person; whilst minimising unhelpful societal expectations and negative social control.
