My first publication! 📃 After almost three years, my bachelor's thesis on the search for a utopian tradition in China was published as a journal article last week. 💡 My article provides insights into Chinese utopian thoughts originating in Confucianism and Daoism and challenges the prevailing idea that 'utopia' is a western concept. Thanks to Stichting Shilin: Leiden University Journal of Young Sinology and my supervisor from Universiteit Leiden #utopia #sinology #china #confucianism #daoism Note: the article was published in Dutch. ‘Holm and her colleague, University of Notre Dame faculty member Dan Machiela, received a $50,000 Collaborative Research grant for their project, "The Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls at the Crossroads of Empire: Negotiating Jewish Life under Foreign Rule,” which is focused on how the Aramaic texts among the Dead Sea Scrolls interpret and reinterpret Jewish experiences under foreign rule during the first millennium BCE. While the approximately 2,000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls were written primarily in Hebrew, some of the texts are in Aramaic, then a commonly spoken language across the ancient Near East that was “uniquely positioned to be the language of intercultural communication due to its use in imperial bureaucracies,” according to Holm. “Unlike the Hebrew scrolls, those in Aramaic have been largely unexplored as a resource for understanding ancient Judaism, yet they are particularly creative in describing Jewish life under the powerful Persian and Hellenistic empires, while also reinterpreting experiences under the earlier Egyptian, Assyrian and Babylonian empires,” Holm said…’ https://lnkd.in/gz_FYWDk

📣 Ritual As Speculative Portal: An Online Offering by LOATAD Prof. Ian H. Munro Fellow, Kwame Boafo 📅 THIS SATURDAY, 30 NOVEMBER, 2024 🕰️ 3pm GMT 📍Online 🎫 Register: bit.ly/loatadboafo ABOUT THE EVENT “This sharing is part of a larger exploration of African rituals, a journey where I dive into the complex world of ritual practices—sometimes reflecting, questioning, and always journeying alongside these personal and communal expressions. My intention here is not to define rituals in any final sense but to engage in a kind of free-flowing conversation that invites reflection on a subject often considered taboo or enigmatic. In other words, I don’t aim to offer a complete account of rituals; instead, I acknowledge that rituals resist being neatly defined; no single perspective can encompass their full depth or potential. What I offer here is an evolving constellation of insights—woven from personal anecdotes, artistic explorations, and scholarly reflections. These observations are meant to serve as starting points, sparks that might ignite further exploration, and encourage others to engage with rituals in their own lives, both as individuals and as part of larger communities. I explore rituals as archives, as sources of creativity and resistance, and even as portals into speculative realities and alternative futures. I examine how rituals shape our identities and how they pulse through our communities, influencing everything from artistic expression to collective imagination. By offering this constellation of insights, I hope to challenge preconceived notions about rituals.” ABOUT KWAME BOAFO Kwame is a Ghanaian movement artist and scholar who holds a PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies from the National University of Singapore. His curiosity about the body led him to research the materiality of the body and the body as an archive of memory. Through his research, he has delved into the intersection of performance, religion, rituals, movement, and memory, seeking to understand how the body can serve as a vessel for knowledge production and memory-making. #loatad #kwameboafo #professorianmunro #loatadmunrofellow #accra #ghana

On this page, we will post recent publications, findings and updates regarding the DHARMA project. But what exactly is this project about? The DHARMA project is a research project funded by the European Research Council. The term 'Dharma' itself has several meanings and can refer to the cosmic and social order as well as the components of this order. The project’s name stands for the ‘Domestication of “Hindu” Asceticism and the Religious Making of South and Southeast Asia’. It is the product of a collaboration between the CESAH (Centre d’études asiatiques et himalayennes), the EFEO (Ecole Française d’Extrême Orient), the Humboldt University, and the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’. The objective of this research is to explore and contextualize Hindu institutionalism between the 7th and 13th century, across South and South-East Asia. You can learn more about this project, its members, and its methodology here: https://lnkd.in/eHshCbmD You can also watch an explanation video about the project here: https://lnkd.in/e6_tZXHG This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement n° 809994).

I’m thrilled to share that my TEDx talk, "The Scientist in You," has been officially released on the TEDx YouTube channel! In this talk, I explore how the principles of curiosity, experimentation, and resilience—often seen as exclusive to scientists—are tools we all use in our everyday lives. This talk is especially close to my heart, as it highlights the importance of thinking critically, embracing challenges, and unlocking potential in ourselves and others. 💡 Watch the full talk here: https://lnkd.in/dmSMjCzr I would love to hear your thoughts—how do you embrace your inner scientist? #TEDx #TheScientistInYou #Neuroscience #Psychology #Education #Curiosity #Leadership

The special issue of Translation Matters on (inter-)epistemic translation is finally out! Epistemic translation is a new lens with great explanatory potential. My article about the advent of intelligent design in Arabic through translations by Islamic organizations is an attempt to view the epistemic divide between science and religion in relation to biological evolution through this lens.
