What was the intent? When miscommunication happens, often it is because someone did not understand the other person (for whatever reason). One of the things that I took away from RAFC Cranwell as an officer cadet in 1989 (and built into my NTS training and my own practice) was that if A does not understand B, it is B who needs to change or update their message. However, A does have some responsibility to say 'I don't understand' when B checks understanding (assuming they do the checking). Ironically, I used to use A and B in my classes, and people got confused. So I started to use names! It is much easier to identify who is doing the speaking then. "If John doesn't understand Kate, then Kate needs to change her message..." In the case of the sign below, there are (at least) three different possible meanings: 1- there are crocodiles here, so do not swim 2- the crocodiles don't swim here 3- hey you crocodiles, don't swim here And with one-way communications (the message on the sign to us), then the checking of understanding isn't that easy! #communicationisnoteasy #communication #nontechnicalskills

INSTRUCTORS ARE EXPERTS RIGHT? ✅ That is certainly the assumption, or at least the facade that many instructors would want you to believe. ✅ Particularly the ones that don't, themselves, train. ✅ Maybe it's a societal thing - we've been conditioned to simply put faith in what our school teachers, instructors, and so-called SME's are telling us - that they know what they're doing, right? ✅ Maybe it's a legislation thing, maybe it's just too easy to become an instructor - a 2-day course and a piece of paper can make you one. ✅ I can count the number of truly inspirational and humble instructors, that I I've ever been taught by, and who I wanted to emulate, on the one hand. The most memorable was my Senior Brecon (PSBC) Instructor - a guy called Brian McNab, from the Royal Irish Regiment. ✅ Another was the late Dave Lewis, who taught me when I went through my Special Duties (OP MAXIMISE) training. ✅ Both of these gentlemen, delivered their instruction with an eclectic mix of knowledge, humour and humility - not your typical military-style instructor approach. ✅ Humility, as an instructor, comes from acknowledging, and accepting, that you're never as good as you think you are - these guys taught me that, and it has been the most important "lesson" I've learned, in all my years of Instruction. ✅ A shorter version of this post could've simply been - "...don't be a dick..." but it doesn't really have the same inspirational message. 😉

Allow Yourself to Become, Child! - Reflections on Becoming 10. Trophy Civilian 🌱We learn through learning about ourselves, the things we don't like about ourselves. 🌱We learn through learning about ourselves, the things others don't like about us. 🌱We learn through learning about ourselves, that the best thing in life is learning about ourselves so that we do not eventually find ourselves letting the world dictate how we should live our lives. https://lnkd.in/eFq7vzRS
