If you had pulled into the Red Bull Racing parking lot on any given day and saw the unmistakable enjoyment and fun we were having, you probably wouldn't have thought we knew anything about excellence or success. Anyone outside of Red Bull Racing would have probably thought they were pulling into a circus. The truth is, however, that we had two outstanding pit crews and even won the 2008 World Pit Crew Championship. We experienced the highs and lows of every young team in our first few years, but by the third year ... let's just say our contracts went from performance-heavy bonuses for every fast pit stop to strictly salary. No one blamed them: we would have been paid way too much. Of twelve top-level athletes, more than half were offered jobs from the big NASCAR teams, which included big raises-but no one left Red Bull. Money can get you many things, but it doesn't buy environment. One of the key lessons we took away from our experience as pit crew members at Red Bull was how fun work could be. We learned that pitting race cars didn't have to be the cold, performance-driven, cutthroat, high-pressure environment that so many of our colleagues experienced with other teams. There were countless days when we each drove to work in the morning laughing in the car about something that happened the day before. Rarely do you hear people say, "I can't wait to go to work," but that was how we felt. Every. Single. Day. Everything at Red Bull Racing was a competition, whether it was playing wiffle ball on MLB Opening Day (a tradition we carry on today at Trackhouse Racing) or street hockey in the parking lot or simply seeing how long someone could hang from a pull-up bar in the gym. It was like we were middle school kids at recess, trying to outdo each other in everything. And as fun and crazy as it was, this competition within our team also made us better at pitting race cars. We were pushing one another. Challenging one another. Encouraging one another to be the very best each person could be. What can McLaren Racing teach us about developing high-performance teams at work??? As there stock continues to rise in the high performing World of F1 this year, we thought taking a look at lessons we can bring in to Work environments wasn't a bad idea... 💡Rethink the star player: as we know these people can have an incredible impact on their teams...but think differently, Quickly upskill your teams, have the star player find ways to share their expertise organisation-wide 💡Reframe business performance as a team sport: Think like a high performing sports team...every member is expected to have a voice and play a critical role and just as importantly they don't point fingers or blame each other when something goes wrong. Each failure is an opportunity to learn and understand 💡Take an inclusive approach to learning: High-performance teams are also diverse teams - groups of people representative of all different life experiences #Sisupeople #recruitment #talent

Yesterday, Lewis Hamilton made history by becoming the first F1 driver to win on any track nine times, extending his incredible F1 record to 104 race wins. If you caught the race, you probably felt a tug at your heartstrings watching his emotional celebration at the end. Who knew a multi-millionaire could be so relatable!? 🏎 In his post-race interview, Hamilton got real about "the constant challenge we all have to get out of bed every day and give our best shot." Now, I’m not saying recruitment is quite like driving a car at 200+ mph for 90 minutes, but the struggle is real! During the rollercoaster ride that is talent acquisition, whether you're in agency or in-house, it often feels like there are "so many times when you feel like your best shot is not good enough." But let's take a page from Lewis's playbook: stay resilient, keep pushing, and remember that even when things get tough, giving our best shot every day is what eventually leads to those big wins—whether it’s on the track or in the office! #talentacquisition #recruitment #f1 #resilience #mentalhealthawareness

Programme Executive at Rolls-Royce | Leading, motivating, and executing complex supply chain and engineering project portfolios, and programmes.
As is usual for a Wednesday evening, I’m currently sat on the cold benches of burton rugby club, watching my 12 year old daughter being expertly put through her paces by the coaches for her youth rugby team. As I’m watching her practicing putting in those killer tackles, it amazes me in such a full contact sport, the levels of camaraderie and bond the team have, which binds the players together in a way we have typically forgotten as adults. I’m passing the time - and doing my best to take my mind off my numbing posterior sat on the cold bench - in my usual way of catching up on the day’s emails on my phone; and I can’t help my mind drifting to the contrast between this unconstrained energy of a team of individuals working towards a common goal with such unfiltered abandon, compared to the competing priorities, and self imposed constraints that we apply as ‘grown ups’ at work. In youth rugby, every player contributes their unique strengths to create a winning team. This is exactly the philosophy of our #WinningTogether transformation at Rolls-Royce. Having a crystal clear strategy, with everyone aligned to a set of common goals, all contributing our individual strengths to do exactly that - Win Together. My reflection for tonight is to be more like a 12 year old in my approach to delivering on product cost - embrace the optimism, pull together as a team, take the knocks and forget those self imposed constraints that my nearly-45 year old self has undoubtedly built up over the years. #RollsRoyce #WinningTogether #ProductCost

Sometimes par is all that’s needed to win 🏆 I was able to witness another great sports story in person this weekend. Brooks Koepka and John Rahm entered the 18th tee box tied at 19-under on Sunday. My wife and I stood just a few feet from two of the best to ever play the game - cool, calm, and collected. Both golfers had average shots. Both golfers had reasonable recovery putts on the green. Both shot par. Off to “Overtime” we went - where they would play the 18th hole until someone shot a better score than the other. Both golfers, again, had average shots. Both were able to reasonably recover and setup close putts for par. But, while Brooks made his short putt, John did not. It’s a great reminder that sometimes “average”, or par on this case, is enough to win. We don’t always have to over achieve, go the extra mile, or strain ourselves to create a miraculous ending. It’s OK to be consistent, be average, and succeed because your competitors always have an opportunity to slip up - just like you do. #CustomerSuccess #ProfessionalServices #Consulting #CustomerExperience #Consistency

It is the time of the year when a lot of team managements in GAA are beginning to make plans for the coming season. Many successful teams begin with a vision in mind of what the end product might look like, who they aspire to be or how they want to be seen from the outside or internally. A good vision can often unite a team and enhance squad commitment. It could be an idea to follow Stevens 2002 four step strategy for developing a vision for your team. 1. plan an initial coaches meeting - begin with the end in mind. 2. run a subsequent team meeting- player input, develop ownership 3. connect daily activities to the success of the vision. 4. Regular evaluation of whether progress is aligned to vision. Stevens 2002 goes into each step on how they implemented the steps.

What is your team doing to be as #productive as possible? How do you make the process more efficient, and yet maintain a #foodsafetyculture? Shout out to Michelle Brydalski for the origional post!
Quick Changeovers…Food for Thought. At one point in my career, I led quick changeover teams. I am a fan of this approach to thinking about how to optimize your processes to get the most out of your systems and increase productivity. When training a new team, I always referred to a NASCAR Pit Style crew do get the team in the right frame of mind. Well, in the spirit of continuous improvement, I challenge all of us to dig even deeper and never stop that continuous improvement mindset.
