Many underserved areas have quite limited access to healthcare, and we've already seen how telehealth has begun to bridge that access gap. Access is even slimmer, however, to specialty care. This is where the potential of telehealth for AI-powered remote surgery could come into play. By analyzing vast amounts of patient data, AI could help surgeons identify potential issues during surgery and improve outcomes. To be fully honest, I don't think we'll see this technology used on a wide-scale anytime soon, but its implications and the potential that it would bring are very interesting to consider. As previously mentioned, it would allow geographical barriers to become less of a factor in specialty care, but it could also ease the effects of staffing shortages. #Healthcare #AI #Telehealth

🩻 Charging patients an extra $40 for an optional AI analysis of their medical imaging… does it make sense? Well it’s already happening… A chain of over 350 imaging centers across the U.S. is offering an optional AI analysis for mammograms, at a direct to patient cost of $40. The pitch? The company’s internal research of 18 radiologists found improved performance in screening for cancer with radiologist + AI when compared to radiologist only. However insurance doesn’t cover using AI to assist with reading images - hence charging patients if they want what they’re being told is a more accurate cancer screen. Is it resonating with patients? Well 35% of women are paying the extra $40 for the human + AI offering. My thoughts? 1️⃣ This perspective in medicine that we should only do actions that we can literally bill for is getting out of hand. The fee-for-service model drives this approach, and unless we find a way to get rid of FFS for good, we will always see innovation and improved ways of delivering care wait for billing codes to exist before they are used at scale. Or, as in this case, the bill being passed to the patient. We saw this at the start of the pandemic too: physicians wouldn’t (or couldn’t?) pick up the telephone to talk to a patient until there was a telemedicine billing code. We can’t keep doing this. 2️⃣ Shouldn’t radiologist + AI assistance allow the radiologists to both complete mammogram screens more accurately AND faster? Maybe I’m missing something, but assuming speed and accuracy are both enhanced, there should be higher volume/throughput of imaging done… and the associated revenue from that should more than make up for the cost of the AI. If this were true, you’d want this human + AI approach to reach 100% of patients. That this doesn’t happen suggests radiologists are spending the same amount of time with or without the AI assistance - or perhaps MORE time if they use the AI assistance. Why is that? Perhaps because they read the image independently and then double check the AI feedback..? If true… is that the best workflow? My radiologist friends, I’d love to get your insight…. But for everyone, what do you think: should we need direct, additional reimbursement for an add-on AI tool to any diagnostic test or procedure to make taking advantage of AI possible? From 11 billion in 2021 to $188 billion by 2030 - that's how much the market for AI in healthcare will grow - astounding, isn't it? At the moment, AI is a master at streamlining hospital processes. Take the use of chatbots, for example. Not only can they ask a patient about their symptoms, but triage them and schedule appointments, even assess a patient’s symptoms if they are feeling too ill for surgery.
