🤔🤔 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are crucial for building strong workplaces, but truth is - implementing them effectively can be tricky. I've seen some initiatives fizzle out, and here are a couple of reasons why, in my experience: Tick-the-☑️ Mentality: We bring in diverse talent, but forget about fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. It's more than just numbers! True inclusion requires a cultural shift. Unconscious Bias Lurking👀: We all have biases, myself included. If we don't actively challenge them in ourselves and others, they can create invisible barriers. These are just my thoughts, and I'm sure there's more to the story. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: My personal experience I believe my first big exposure to cultural diversity was when I moved to France as a teenager. Initially, I felt completely lost in school without knowing a single word of French (other than 'bonjour'). One of the teachers told me I read French like it was English. Unable to communicate with most students or teachers, I felt excluded. However, I was fortunate to have an amazing class teacher who took a special interest in me. Recognising my strengths, he placed me in a higher-level English class, highlighted my achievements and provided constructive feedback. He always encouraged me to speak, even when my French was far from perfect and took active steps to reduce the barriers I faced. Thanks to his incredible support, at the end of the first year, I was recognised by the school as the most progressed student in my class. From struggling to pronounce 'bonjour' to being celebrated for my progress, my journey was transformative. Just imagine if our team leads could recognise the potential and challenges of every team member and work towards supporting them in similar ways. The possibilities for our teams and organisations would be limitless.
