Creating a "liveability ecosystem" means everyone considers "the inter-dependent set of complex relationships between the social, economic, physical, and cultural aspects of how and where we live". In simple terms, it's not just about throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks to address the short supply of housing - it's about strategically building unique, connected and sustainable communities. “Changes to boost social interaction needn't be very expensive, they might just be adding a couple of nice chairs in a common area.” Check out this article featuring Madeleine Hebert: https://lnkd.in/g44ywmTR It focuses on how design tweaks in multi-unit buildings can encourage more social and neighbourly interactions. Happy Cities and Hey Neighbour Collective recently published their Building Social Connections Toolkit, sharing design strategies to ensure new homes strengthen health, social connection, resilience and inclusion. https://lnkd.in/gWh_KiZ2 We’re excited to collaborate with both of them in their next phase of work to expand their toolkit with national workshops that highlight the interconnections between design for climate mitigation, social connectivity and more❣️ #SocialConnection #MultiUnitHousing #BC #Resource

Grateful for mention alongside our project partners Happy Cities in The Globe and Mail. This article focused on multi-family building designs that allow for density, but that also foster a sense of community and social connection. "Our housing can do more for us." "She [Michelle Hoar] and Madeleine Hebert, who leads housing research at Happy Cities, emphasize repeatedly that fostering social connections among people as cities densify is not some feel-good thing: It’s a crucial component of resilient, healthy cities." https://lnkd.in/gfrJBhn9 #densification #urbanism #resilientcities

𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀: 𝗔 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀? Last week, I attended a Design Council roundtable - at Park Hill, Sheffield - to tackle a pressing question: How do we design and deliver 1.5 million homes in line with the UK’s climate commitments? The panel featured a distinguished group of developers, architects, planners, urban designers, professors, community leaders, and city officials. There was consensus that, in its current form, the government’s new town agenda falls short of ensuring sustainable, well-designed housing, and echoes sentiments we’ve heard before. In response, I proposed an alternative: Living Neighbourhoods—places designed to help all life flourish. This builds on Planit’s successful work with Sheffield City Council. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 Cities and their neighbourhoods have a reciprocal relationship. Interventions at the neighbourhood scale often yield the best results for achieving net-zero goals. Neighbourhoods are where the flows of energy, resources, and people converge—making them the ideal scale for tangible, transformative change. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 Living Neighbourhoods should be guided by the following principles: 1. Highly Participatory - These are diverse, inclusive places where local people co-create neighbourhood projects. Residents act as stewards of their communities, taking responsibility for how their neighbourhoods operate. Examples include CIVIC SQUARE at Loop and Plant Co-operative CIC at NOMA. 2. Potential-Seeking - Living Neighbourhoods embrace proactive, ambitious goals tied to a larger purpose—contributing positively to the city at large. The Leeds Innovation Arc is a perfect example of this forward-thinking approach. 3. Capability-Enabling - Beyond being carbon-sequestering developments, Living Neighbourhoods foster coexistence between people and nature. They empower citizens to live healthier, more purposeful lives. Northern Roots Urban Farm & Eco-Park, where food production, business, and environmental stewardship thrive together, exemplifies this principle. 4. Adaptive and Transformational - The best neighbourhoods evolve with time, trying new ideas and responding to global shifts. They inspire change in larger systems through their success. Altrincham Town Centre, for instance, adapted to changing retail trends, creating a thriving ecosystem of independent businesses that has since been replicated elsewhere. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 To create truly sustainable communities, we must learn from our successes, failures, and ongoing innovations. As the great Marshall Goldsmith reminds us, “What got you here won’t get you there!” By embracing Living Neighbourhoods, we can create homes that not only meet the climate challenge but also enable people, nature, and communities to thrive together. This is why we created Humengi: "It is estimated that around 80% of cities worldwide do not have affordable housing options for the majority of their population (1). The world needs to provide two billion homes over the next 75 years — meaning 96,000 new affordable homes need to be built every day (2)." Humengi will play a large role in helping solve this challenge around the world and we are always open to collaboration with industry partners. https://lnkd.in/gne8g2gi

🌟 The Importance of Building a Community in Real Estate Developments 🌟 In today's fast-paced world, whether you're involved in large-scale developments or single-building projects, fostering a sense of community has never been more crucial. 🏢🏘️ More and more real estate developments are proudly showcasing "Community" in their taglines, and there's a simple reason why: it sells. Why Community Lifestyle Matters: Enhanced Well-being: A strong community lifestyle promotes social interaction, leading to happier and healthier residents. Whether it's a commercial space or a residential neighborhood, human connections are key to emotional well-being. Increased Value: Developments that prioritize community elements often see higher property values. People are willing to invest more in spaces where they feel a sense of belonging and connection. Attractive to Tenants and Buyers: A vibrant community atmosphere is a significant draw for potential tenants and buyers. Amenities that encourage socializing, such as parks, common areas, and community events, make a property stand out. Sustainable Living: Community-focused developments often incorporate sustainable practices that more and more recently have become a must rather than a nice to have. Shared resources, green spaces, and collaborative consumption reduce environmental impact and create a more sustainable living environment. Fosters Innovation and Collaboration: For commercial spaces, a strong community can lead to increased innovation and collaboration among businesses. Networking opportunities within a supportive environment can drive growth and success. Today’s sophisticated developers understand that successful projects go beyond bricks and mortar—they create vibrant, supportive environments where people thrive. By focusing on community, they enhance property values, attract investors and tenants, and promote well-being and sustainability. Building with community in mind is a commitment to crafting spaces that foster connections, collaboration, and a higher quality of life. #BuildingCommunities #RealEstateDevelopment #CommunityLiving #SustainableDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #PropertyManagement
