Evolutionary Diversity Among Large Cat Species Large cats, belonging to the subfamily Pantherinae, exhibit remarkable evolutionary diversity, shaped by millions of years of adaptation to diverse habitats, prey, and environmental challenges. The group includes iconic species such as lions (Panthera leo), tigers (Panthera tigris), leopards (Panthera pardus), jaguars (Panthera onca), and snow leopards (Panthera uncia). Their evolutionary trajectories reveal fascinating insights into how they have developed distinct physical traits, behaviors, and ecological niches while sharing a common ancestor. Are you ready to dive into the mysterious depths of the ocean? Truthfully, deep waters terrify me. Did you know that we have only explored around five percent of our oceans? I’m actually so surprised whenever I hear that fact. And I’ll tell you why — because we’re out here trying all we can to get into space hoping to come into contact with extraterrestrials. But what if there’s also some sort of extraterrestrial civilization much closer to us, that’s living in the depths of the ocean? It would honestly make so much sense. Especially considering that some of the marine creatures that we are familiar with do resemble aliens so much. This topic is such a big one, that it will be hard to fit into one article. Also — I would strongly encourage you to Google each of these organisms that we’re going to mention today. Just looking at a few pictures of them will give you a whole new perspective. So, without any further ado, let’s go over some of the most mystical marine creatures that look like they could be from another planet.

Did you know that the deepest parts of the ocean are called the "hadal zone"? Named after Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, this area is known for its crushing pressures and extreme darkness– but it’s not completely void of life. In fact, #WHOI’s Johanna Weston, along with researchers from Instituto Milenio de Oceanografía, recently discovered a new type of crustacean in the Atacama Trench near Chile! At 1.5 inches (4cm), the newly-named Dulcibella camanchaca is the largest-known predator in the hadal zone! With raptor-like pincers and tusk-like front appendages, this fast-swimming amphipod is likely one of the most fiercesome animals to make its home at 25,000 feet (7,600 m)! As exploration technology advances, scientists anticipate uncovering more species, each offering insights into the evolutionary pressures and adaptations unique to the deep ocean. 📲Dive deeper into this extreme discovery with @Popular Science: https://lnkd.in/eZ_dJFh2 📸 by Johanna Weston © WHOI

The research we do today helps the world tomorrow. This video from seven years ago documents a crew with National Geographic Pristine Seas doing an exploration dive aboard our DeepSee submersible. These dives help scientists better understand ecosystems and their marine life. In this case, three female scientists were studying the enchanting Galapagos Islands. This mission helped to identify several new species, aiding the knowledge and conservation efforts of the unique island chain. #nationalgeographic #ProtectingParadise https://lnkd.in/efEx_jaN

The oldest animals on Earth, in terms of individual lifespan or species longevity, include: By Michael Mick Webster Ocean Quahog (Arctica islandica) – These clams can live over 500 years. The oldest recorded specimen, named "Ming," lived to be around 507 years old. Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus) – These sharks can live for 300 to 500 years, making them the longest-living vertebrates on Earth. Antarctic Sponge (Anoxycalyx joubini) – Some species of sponges in the cold Antarctic waters are estimated to be over 10,000 years old due to their extremely slow growth rates. Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) – Some individuals, like a tortoise named Jonathan, have lived for over 190 years. Jonathan, currently the oldest known land animal, was born around 1832. Bowhead Whale (Balaena mysticetus) – Bowhead whales can live over 200 years, with one individual being estimated at 211 years old. These animals are remarkable for their extreme lifespans, often far outliving humans and offering unique insights into aging and longevity.
