Global Leaders Pledged to Protect Nature: In 2022, governments promised to improve their relationship with nature by the end of the decade. This includes stopping human-caused extinctions and restoring damaged ecosystems. Challenges in Monitoring Earth's Health: While we have data on nearly 375,000 species, it's incomplete. Only 6.74% of the planet is well studied, leaving areas like high mountains and deep oceans a mystery. Additionally, most data comes from just four regions (Europe, US, Australia, and South Africa) and focuses on a small percentage of known species. New Tools for a Global View: Thankfully, technology is helping. Techniques like eDNA analysis, acoustic monitoring, and DNA barcoding offer new ways to assess ecosystem health and discover unknown species. Scientists are also developing advanced scanning technologies to check entire forests for disease and map species distribution. The Need for Global Cooperation: Despite these advancements, scientists need a bigger picture. They urge the creation of a global observation system similar to weather monitoring.
