The Difference Between Undergraduate and Postgraduate Options Abroad 🌏🎓 Choosing between undergraduate and postgraduate study abroad can impact your post-study work visa, part-time job options, internships, and job opportunities. Here’s how they differ: 1. Post-Study Work Visa 🛂 Undergraduate: Many countries, including the UK, Canada, and Australia, offer post-study work visas for graduates. Duration varies, typically 2-3 years. Postgraduate: Offers longer visa periods due to higher qualifications. For example, in Canada, postgraduate students are often eligible for 3-year work permits. 2. Part-Time Work 💼 Undergraduate: You are generally allowed to work part-time (15-20 hours/week) during studies and full-time during breaks. Postgraduate: The same rules apply, but postgraduate students may have less time due to intensive coursework. 3. Internships 📚 Undergraduate: Internships are encouraged but often optional. Opportunities may be limited depending on the field and region. Postgraduate: Internships can be a core part of the program, especially in STEM, business, and engineering fields, offering advanced career growth opportunities. 4. Job Opportunities 👩💻 Undergraduate: Job opportunities can vary depending on your degree and country. Lower-level qualifications may limit some career options. Postgraduate: Provides access to higher-paying jobs and specialized roles in sectors like research, management, and technology. Choose based on your career goals and what aligns with your long-term vision! As soon as you land in the U.S. as an international student, the clock begins ticking to land an internship. What if you can’t? Context : Most international students come to the U.S. in Fall so they can bag an internship by summer and be eligible to work as an intern by then (as per student visa restrictions). As soon as one lands, the race begins to bag an offer. This is extremely crucial, as most full time offers post grad come from those internships. But, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t land one. Here’s a few potential solutions: 1. Apporach your professors to ask if you can intern under them for the summer. Although this won’t result in a full time offer post grad, it would add significant value to your CV. 2. Start networking with startup founders in the U.S. as soon as Fall semester starts. I have seen many grad students get hired through networking as an intern rather than just through the conventional application route. 3. If you have worked in India before moving to U.S., approach your ex-manager to explore the possibility of working as an intern for the U.S. office remotely. 4. Look through internal job portal for on campus jobs to see if there are opportunities as GA/RA at the office of provost or other academic departments. This is what I did as a spring student. Not only did I bag an important opportunity, but also utilised it to land my full time role at Visa. 5. Speak to the international students office to find out if there are any opportunities within your school specifically for international or grad students. What other ways can you think of as a potential solutions to not having a summer internship? Let me know in the comments below! This series of posts is my effort to share potential solutions to most frequently faced problems by international students in the U.S. (covered in this post: https://lnkd.in/g457jK46) P.S. I’m Shreya Mishra & I talk about my experiences as an international student & corporate woman in America. Follow along to keep learning with me. #internationalstudents #gradschool #studyabroad

Are we limiting global talent by overcomplicating international paid internships? 🌍💼 It amazes me that VISA regulations continue to create significant barriers for students seeking paid internships abroad in our increasingly connected world. This not only limits valuable cultural exchange but also: 👉🏼 Restricts access to global work experience 👉🏼 Hampers skill development in international settings 👉🏼 Reduces diversity in workplace environments 👉🏼 Limits companies' access to fresh, global perspectives Why is it so difficult for the next generation of professionals to gain international work experience? Shouldn't we be encouraging global mobility and cross-cultural competence? It's time to reassess our approach to international internships. We need policies that foster global talent development, not hinder it. Please let me know what your thoughts are. Have you experienced challenges with international internships due to VISA regulations? Let's discuss how we can push for positive change in this area.
