Theatre provides numerous avenues for releasing emotional tension, from acting and improvisation to writing and directing. By engaging with the art form, individuals can explore and express their emotions, gain new perspectives, and experience a sense of emotional release and catharsis. Whether through formal drama therapy or informal participation in theatrical activities, theatre can be a powerful tool for emotional healing and personal growth. Here's one of the techniques we use during our workshop. Techniques for Releasing Emotional Tension through Theatre Breathing Exercises: Before performances, actors often engage in deep breathing exercises to relax and prepare emotionally. Physical Warm-Ups: Movement and stretching can help release physical tension and prepare the body for expressive work. Vocal Exercises: Vocal warm-ups can help actors free their voices, enabling them to express emotions more fully. Visualization: Actors might use visualization techniques to connect with their characters’ emotions and experiences. Journaling: Keeping a journal of their experiences and emotions related to their performances can help actors process their feelings. #cathartic #theatretherapy #healyourinnerchild #transformationaltheatrecoach #theatre #therapy #theatreofthefuture #theatreoftommorrow #digitaltheatre #digitaltransformation #theatre #therapy

My idea of an intense, unplugged, human-sized form of theatre has informed what I have been doing over the last fifty years. I call it The Burning Stage. It's not a set of rules but a way of thinking about Drama that supports those who are trying to reinvent theatre for the 21st Century. Read the Blog here: https://lnkd.in/eKKmujHc

🎭 Theatre vs. Movies: A Tale of Two Art Forms 🎬 Both theatre and movies have captivated audiences for centuries, but their magic lies in their differences: Theatre: A live, unfiltered experience, where actors perform in real-time, adapting to the energy of the audience. Every performance is unique, with no retakes—just raw emotion and creativity on stage. Movies: A meticulously crafted story, perfected through multiple takes, editing, and special effects. It’s designed to be experienced on a screen, delivering the same polished product to millions worldwide. While theatre immerses you in the intimacy of the moment, movies transport you to worlds beyond imagination with cutting-edge technology. Both forms celebrate storytelling in their own way—one fleeting and live, the other timeless and replayable. Which art form resonates more with you, and why? Let’s celebrate the beauty of both in the comments below! #Theatre #Movies #Storytelling #Creativity #PerformingArts

🌟 **The Power of the Circle in Theatre Arts and Leadership** 🎭 As someone deeply immersed in theatre arts, I've come to appreciate a beautiful metaphor that resonates throughout our work: the circle. In our world, a circle represents so much more than just a shape. It embodies unity, collaboration, and the cyclical nature of creativity. Here’s why I believe the power of the circle is essential for all theatre administrators: **1. Collaboration & Inclusivity** Every voice matters in this circle. Encouraging input from actors, designers, and staff fosters a creative environment where diverse narratives can thrive. **2. Community Building** Theatre has an incredible way of connecting people. By forming circles in our teams and outreach, we break down barriers and nurture relationships that extend beyond the stage. **3. The Cycle of Creation** Theatre moves in cycles: conception, rehearsal, performance, and reflection. Honoring each phase helps us grow and renew our art with every new project. **4. Resilience & Adaptability** In tough times, we can return to our circle for support. Leaning on one another can inspire innovative solutions and strengthen our resolve. **5. Connecting with Audiences** Creating a circle of connection with our audience is vital. Through interactive experiences and discussions, we can deepen their investment in our stories and mission. In our journey through the complexities of theatre, let’s prioritize the formation of circles. When every voice is heard and every story matters, we unlock the transformative power of this magnificent art form. Let’s keep the conversation going! What does the circle mean to you in your work? ***Photo from International Thespian Festival 2019 Pre Show of Bright Star: School Edition

I've always joked that my day job supports my theatre habit. Turns out it was my theatre habit supporting my day job all along. "Theatre helps teach you how to learn — we have to learn new skills, research new worlds, and solve tangible practical problems with every new production. Actors quickly learn stuff all the time — new dialects, speech patterns, physical movements, sword fighting, etc. They research time periods and constantly expand their emotional capacity and empathy. Technical folks are always doing new things with each production — new building techniques and challenges continually present themselves. Every production has at least one technical “How in the world are we going to do that?” problem. And guess what? Every single one gets solved one way or another — and they have to be solved in a cost-efficient and timely manner. Throwing money at the problem is never an option in theatre, so we get very good at problem solving. We are constantly learning new skills in the theatre. Since we do it so regularly, it means we are really really (really) good at learning in a tangible “real-world” setting."

D for Dissonance in Devised Theatre Devised, immersive theatre pushes boundaries, but what happens when implicit bias starts to play a role? When working on Memos from a Theatre Lab, this is one of the questions we explored. Turns out, perhaps unsurprisingly, that when actors in devised, participatory, immersive theatre engage with spectators that they either have a prior relationship with and/or have an implicit bias toward/against based on race, gender, or other factors — various dissonances arise. Between actor and character. Between character and spectator. Between audience and performer. Implicit biases influence audience-actor interactions in such theatrical worlds, altering the experience for performers and audiences alike. If you want to know more about how we engaged with this idea, check out: https://lnkd.in/dFYUnNhf #devisedtheatre #immersivetheatre #implicitbias #theatrestudies
