In the wake of Warner Music Group’s announcement to develop a superfan app, one can’t help but ponder the strategic decision behind building a proprietary platform rather than capitalizing on existing fan-centric ecosystems like Fave. Fave has already established itself as a hub where superfans can connect, share, and even monetize their passion for major label artists. It’s intriguing to consider the potential synergies that could be unlocked if WMG leveraged such a platform, which is already backed by industry giants and has a proven track record of engaging fans in meaningful ways The creation of a standalone app certainly allows for tailored experiences and direct data insights, but it also raises questions about market fragmentation and user adoption. What will the future look like for major record labels? We can look to some recent music business news to give us some clues: - Major layoffs announced at the big three labels - “Strategic restructuring” at Universal Music - Warner’s $1.8 billion dollar bid for Believe Music, one of the largest independent music catalogs on the planet. - Streaming consumption of catalog represent over 70% of the US market and growing, even though tens of thousands of songs are released. Every. Single. Day. Here’s a brief history. The three nearly identical major labels known as Sony, Universal, and Warner are made up of dozens of mergers and acquisitions of small regional labels that occurred over decades. Before this era, these smaller labels had unique offerings and built culture around their artists. Since the early 2000s however, these smaller labels, although mostly operating as an independent team within the larger behemoths are just line items on the same budget often competing with each other and yet offering no distinguishing qualities that sets one apart from the other. On top of this, the old VC model of investing in the developing talent is way too expensive for a company looking to demonstrate significant growth to shareholders. UMG’s restructuring will do away with both the classic label brands that are meaningless to the consumer, thin out development and marketing teams, and move away from silo’d teams. Instead, they will adopt a shared services model and focus on: - Acquiring and servicing catalog (Rights holding/publishing model and the primary source of revenue) - Distribution services (white label service) - Creative/marketing services for the top 1% of popular talent This structure will focus catalog and distribution across the company, and then offer marketing and creative for 1% of artists where a major investment will return 10x value without significant risk. Stop! Wait...What?? Did you hear what UMG announced today?!? They are going after Superfans now after they believe (sarcastic tone) they have conquered streaming payment model flaws with their own 'artist-centric' model. 1) Their artist-centric model is flawed and hurts most indie artists and fans. Just read all the research and editorials already being written. 2) The majors have leaned into going viral for so long that the cultivation of an artist's fanbase or brand disappeared. What does this mean? They are trying to kill what they created and chased the past decade: a faceless and brand-less artist that hit overnight to maximize short-term profit. Why does this matter? It shows streaming economies, the Artists, and their fans are not one size fits all. Trying to be everything to everyone does not a business make. What happens now? The creation of D2F streaming platforms for niche audiences, true user-centric payout models and the actual development and cultivation of artist's fan bases by human curators and partnerships. UMG, you are the world's largest music company. You do things well, but maybe it's time to leave the niche categories to those who have decades in the trenches doing what you now see is working for them and their Artists. We've been seeing that distributors are the hottest thing right now in the music industry... But why are they attracting major interest in private equity firms and raising massive amounts in fundraising? One major reason for this increase is the growing influence of AI in music creation. AI is enabling more creatives to produce HD tracks efficiently and independently. This is not only reshaping the industry but also boosting the demand for scalable distribution solutions. Additionally, we're seeing an evolving independence of next-gen creators, who are increasingly looking for autonomy while still benefiting from major-label resources. This can be seen with major "TikTok artists" who have had a song go viral but remain independent. This is an evergrowing trend with more resources and tools at artists' disposal. We've even seen in a 2023 survey that 11% of independent artists can make a living solely through music. While you may think 11% is small, it is definitely taking a piece of the market share from the record labels and will continue to grow. Independent distributors, such as DistroKid, Believe, etc, are handling a larger share of streaming hits, making them essential players in the market. As these companies continue to scale, they’re becoming prime targets for investment and mergers & acquisitions, with this trend set to accelerate over time. #musicindustry #recordlabels #distributors #music #musicnews
