The US National Spectrum Strategy has identified, among other spectrum ranges, 3.1-3.45 GHz as a potential resource for deploying next generation wireless technologies. The Department of Defense and the National Spectrum Consortium relaunched the Partnering to Advance Trusted and Holistic Spectrum Solutions (PATHSS) workgroup last month. https://lnkd.in/ewh7rPvk Their first meeting was held on Wednesday, May 22 bringing together representatives from the government, academia and industry to explore how to share the spectrum between federal and commercial users. This is an extremely ambitious project requiring multiple breakthrough innovations. The challenges were highlighted in the (partially redacted) report published last year. The very best minds from all stakeholders need to work together in order to make the most efficient use of this extremely valuable part of the spectrum.

The World Radio Conference 2023 (WRC-23) concluded with a significant victory for the United States, ensuring the protection of the Defense Department’s radar spectrum from potential interference. This strategic move not only safeguards our national security but also paves the way for advancements in 5G and the future 6G mobile communications networks. At the summit in Dubai, the US delegation, led by Steve Lang from the State Department, successfully opposed proposals that could have compromised the radar systems used by the Navy’s Aegis Combat System. The US also managed to harmonize spectrum for 5G across the Americas, freeing up an impressive 500 megahertz of spectrum for wireless use while protecting incumbent systems. This outcome is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the US officials, DoD representatives, and industry experts who participated in the conference. It’s a clear success story of promoting connectivity, innovation, and national security. The US’s stance also reflects a strong commitment to maintaining a balance between technological growth and defense readiness.
