If you're looking to make the move to a career in #instructionaldesign, you may find yourself wondering just exactly what it is instructional designers do. I was there too when I was looking to leave the k-12 teaching world behind. I discovered instructional design, and found a few videos of instructional designers describing what their work is like, but I always seemed to come away with more questions. Now that I'm an instructional designer in a large public school district, I want to help those wondering about ID to get a good picture of what an ID job looks like. So, Devlin Peck allowed me to create a video for his YouTube channel to do just that. Of course, the role can look different depending on the industry, the size of the ID team, and a variety of other factors, but I think the video will give prospective IDs a good idea of what the job might look like for them. Check out the video with the link in the comments below. And to any fellow IDs who may check out the video: let everybody know in the comments what similarities and differences there are in your ID job!

Why did you choose to be an instructional designer? I actually chose L&D as a function to transition careers. The reason I chose, because I thought L&D could be the space where I can transfer my previous career skills and create some kind of an impact (go through my profile to know more about my previous career). I also had an option to join retail and operations but personally didn't find that to be the right choice for me. I didn't know if L&D was the correct choice but just went with my gut instincts. So far seems to be fruitful with some challenges, but that every job has. I started delivering sessions but pondered upon who was designing the content. I did my research and got a certificate in instructional design, training and development, etc., and that was the beginning of my ID/L&D career. It is easy to write now but it wasn't easy to execute and transition careers then. It takes time, effort, consistency, dedication and pure will to be what you choose to be. While I ask this question, I was having a hard time writing the "why" I chose to be an instructional designer. Hope I have thrown some light on the "why" part. What was your "why" factor to become an instructional designer? Note: The reason could be very silly and that's ok because most of us are accidental instructional designers. Have a nice week ahead!

Notes of an instructional designer… One of the things I love most about instructional design is how it brings together so many different elements. It’s truly cross-disciplinary and draws from a wide range of fields, such as: · Design thinking · Cognitive science · Technology · Learning science · Psychology · The art of communication · Educational theory · Graphic design · Multimedia development · User experience design I'm continually amazed by how much depth there is to this job… and all that complexity? It’s an endless source of inspiration for me. There's always something new to explore and learn. Sure, it can be challenging at times… but that’s what makes being an instructional designer so captivating and rewarding!
