This happens enough with 🎥 interviews that I had to do a post about it. Below is an “editing room” shot from a recent interview with a VERY nervous executive (who will remain anonymous). Too many biz leaders will never talk about your company on camera because, well, you know you just aren’t very good on camera 🤷🏼♂️ Fear not. Just speak freely. Be yourself. I clean up 99% of interview tracks anyways. It's not often that you come across people who impress you so much that you want to hire them immediately, even if there's no immediate job opening. My main takeaway from this morning's call is that my twin sister (business partner)La Tasha T. and I encountered a talented individual who has the potential to make a significant impact in the media industry. 1️⃣ Having a go-getter attitude, this individual could be a valuable asset in media and even start her own brand. 2️⃣ This person's passion and purpose were evident in their voice. They clearly aim to make an impact in the media industry. 3️⃣ Although the individual left the call without full-time employment, they were so impressive that they would be ideal to work on projects, which could lead to a full-time job role within the company. 4️⃣ Stay tuned; this individual may have spoken their job role into existence for the future with our company—God's timing. 🎁I am reminded to use the gifts that God has given me and to encourage others to do the same. You are the script-writer of your story and most of us think we don't have a story to tell. Well it's not that there is no story to tell, but we don't know how to tell our story. A company will never be able to attract a higher quality candidate than the quality of story they're able to tell. If a company has a good story and it resonates with top quality talent, they'll be able to attract and hire that talent. Together they'll put themselves in a much better position to turn that story into a reality. The good news. Stories are moldable and ever evolving. If you're struggling to attract top talent, take a beat and look to your story. Where did you come from? Where are you now? Where are you going? What change are you bringing into the world? Why is this important? What's the big challenge? How can great talent help? What's in it for them to contribute? Stories resonate with people. It's what they remember. Anyone who’s even sniffed at today’s job market knows it’s not for the lazy or faint of heart. Your ideal job listings show 100+ applicants within an hour. Sure you hit submit, but did a human ever even see your application? Your resume? Your thoughtful responses? Will you ever hear back? How do you stand out? How do you connect? Of the myriad challenges in the job market, I’ve also found a more personal challenge: translation of my resume for consumption outside the TV & Film industry. I have 20+ years of experience in TV & Film production, mostly as a Producer. Even before entering the job market outside of TV, I was often asked “Producer? What does that mean?”  “Like, for the news?” “I’m your mother and I still don’t know exactly what Producer means.” “Oh, I think my cousin was a Producer for State Farm. Wait, maybe it was Progressive.” It’s a fair question. What does “Producer” mean, exactly? In my case, it’s most simply aligned to a Creative Project Manager. A Producer is a collaborative leader establishing and supervising workflow while driving a team of fellow creatives toward a common end goal(s). My most favorite of those goals is storytelling. Still without a full-time job in entertainment? Missing collaboration? As I browse LinkedIn and message boards, I see a lot of extraordinarily talented execs that have been laid off upwards of a year as a result of industry contraction. I’m a part of this unfortunate statistic, but I’m making it work for me as best as I can. If I may offer a few pieces of advice on how to stay sane and keep going (especially if you’re mid-level or junior in your career), here’s what has served me: Network. I have been extremely thankful to those who have taken the time to connect with me either in person, or over Zoom. Some have been new connections, others have been people I’ve known over the years. Unemployment won’t be forever, but your relationships will be. Cultivate them. Nurture them. Be a consumer. Use your unemployment or underemployment to find your voice. Watch films and series, read novels, short stories, comics. Find out what material you connect with most. Learn about new writers, directors, and talent you may have once looked over. Make lists. I promise you’ll use them one day. Continue to do the job independent of a company. Find material you love and feel passionate about. Pitch yourself. What do you have to lose? Worst case scenario, you get a “no.” Best case scenario, you have material you can now work to package and produce. Keep connected. Even though you may not be directly employed by a network, studio, production company, etc. doesn’t mean you should stop engaging in news. Keep up to date on what’s happening whether it be Variety, THR, Deadline, The Ankler, Puck News. See someone you once connected with listed in the trade? There’s an open door for a congratulatory e-mail. Plot your next move. Who do you want to be in this industry? Think about carving your own unique path to success and remember that no person has had the same road. My 11 years as a journalist feels so far away now — but it’s also still at the forefront of the work I do every day. My knack for storytelling, my understanding of how to pitch, my drive to meet deadlines when they feel impossible, the way I can make high-powered leaders feel at ease during an interview (or now, a meeting) — it’s why when I decided I was ready to leave news — #PublicRelations was a natural fit. Yes, there’s a difference in writing technical B2B blogs or bylines than a 1 minute or 30 second local news package; I’ll admit there was a small learning curve. But like any good journalist, I’m always up for the challenge of learning something new (and often a bit confusing) and figuring out how to make it easy to understand and appropriate for the right audience. So, why am I writing this post selling my journalistic skills? Well, not really for myself. There are *a lot* of very smart, talented #journalists who were laid off recently — a major network announced one this morning — and more layoffs are likely coming. So, if you’re looking to add to your #comms or #PR team this year, I would recommend you take a look at hiring a journalist. Good storytelling is crucial now more than ever, and journalists are hard workers who know the importance of a deadline, how to connect with different personalities and leaders, know AP style, and they know which pitches they received and moved to their digital trash bin. They might need some great mentoring and coaching (I had an AMAZING supervisor at my first agency who taught me everything she knows — and she knows who she is), they might need some time to adjust to the differing pace of PR work — but hiring a journalist is one of the best assets your #communications team can have.

Tech Reporter: “Is there *anything else* I didn’t ask during this interview that my readers should know?” 🤷♀️ CEO: “No, I um, I think we covered just about everything.” PR pros: 😩 Wrong answer, CEO. When a reporter offers you a *layup* at the end of an interview… … You best SLAM DUNK your most powerful message. To let that opportunity pass is a dereliction of your most important duty: 🌟 storytelling for your brand 🌟 So always have that one *killer final message* in your back pocket. A show-stopper. Think of it as the “pull quote” an editor might put in huge, bold font in the middle of the story. You’ve got this. This is the way ✊ #publicrelations #mediatraining

Time is money...for everyone. - Candidates spend hours creating the "perfect" take instead of focusing on their actual qualifications. - Hiring teams now have to watch dozens of videos. - The recruiting team just became an involuntary film festival jury. The real problems this creates: - Introducing unconscious bias about age, gender, race, and appearance before even meeting candidates. - Creating unnecessary barriers for candidates with disabilities or those who need accommodations. - Potentially missing out on incredible talent who simply don't shine on camera (introverts, I see you!). - Making assumptions about "cultural fit" based on a heavily scripted performance. Maybe the best person for the job isn't the one with the best video editing skills? Unless you're hiring for a TikTok manager, in which case... carry on. The most expensive part? You’re shrinking your talent pool. For every polished video you receive, how many qualified candidates: - Decided not to apply because of the video requirement? - Couldn't find time between their current job and family responsibilities? - Felt uncomfortable with the format due to accent, appearance, or disability? - Simply believed their qualifications should speak louder than their camera presence? Let's keep the focus on what really matters: skills, experience, and potential. Save the video calls for when you’re talking to candidates - you know, having real conversations.
