Prickly pears have evolved in arid climates consuming small amounts of rainwater. Approximately 42% of the world’s land area is classified as semi-arid or arid land. In fact, research, which took place in Logandale, Nevada, ‘Showed that Opuntia Ficus-indica (Prickly Pear) had high fruit production while using up to 80% less water than some traditional crops. Additionally, the plant works as a land-based carbon sink, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to store it in a sustainable way.’ (Nevada Today, 2021). The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit environmental engineering company, had its most successful extraction in August, removing approximately 25,000 pounds of trash from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the world's greatest concentration of ocean garbage. It is supposed to be twice the size of Texas and is located between Hawaii and California. Garbage patches endanger the local environment by entangling marine life in fishing nets, consuming plastic and other debris by animals, and transporting non-native species from distant areas. The goal of the Ocean Cleanup is to remove 90% of floating plastic from the oceans by 2040. #OceanCleanup #GreatPacificGarbagePatch https://lnkd.in/eCTHVu9x

Welcome! On September 14th, the Partners set the table to welcome new capacity to be part of the collaborative clean water work. Highlighting the clean water efforts that have been driving progress so far, this event brought together private sector company leaders and non-profit leaders to discuss the need to improve our local waterways. The focus was to identify and connect participants to new resources and project funding options, discuss mapping and outreach tools that identify priority areas, and learn about multiple business models.   Participants walked away from this event with a better understanding of what initiatives are underway, who is doing this work, how and why to contact them before jumping into landowner conversations - because Lancaster is a very busy place and we have a coordinated approach that is working. We welcome existing and new capacity into that coordination, especially since we know private sector engagement will play an important role in order to meet the approaching countywide deadlines for clean and clear water.   #lancastercleanwaterpartners #LancasterCountyConservationDistrict #cleanwater #water #sustainability #environment #waterislife #nature #cleanwater #ecofriendly #watermanagement #watershed #farming #watershededucation #chesapeakebaywatershed #saveourstreams #waterconservation

At Geeli Mitti we make sure water management is at the heart of everything we do. We also undertake eco-projects in collaboration with government and local administration such as lake restorations, groundwater recharge and water recycling systems. In the Netherlands Wilco van Rooijen and his Grohe Team Ocean prepare themselves for rowing across the mid Pacific in order to raise awareness about water availability and management. Improving and increasing access to tap #water is a key factor of the next future

KWR has been active in the field of PFAS for over a decade, through various projects and the close collaboration with the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) of University of Amsterdam. Thanks to high-end instruments (e.g., tandem and high-resolution mass spectrometry) the quantification of trace level of these contaminants as well as broad screening and identification of emerging PFAS have become possible. Furthermore, KWR has recently developed analytical techniques for the detection and quantification of some upcoming PFAS in water samples. Additional methods are currently being developed at KWR to analyse a much broader range of PFAS, including alternative and emerging PFAS. https://lnkd.in/e-M5Az2i
