Absolutely delighted to see my ex-PhD student (and brilliant researcher) Dr Tess Legg and her work featured in this article - a must read for anyone interested in corporate influence on science: https://lnkd.in/dVvGPw2Q It touches on many things including something those who take corporate funding and think they are above conflict of interest overlook - "Science can be methodologically robust, it can be carried out by researchers with integrity who have done their best to make it an unbiased piece of research. And yet that research can still benefit the industry because it deflects or distracts attention from causes of harm that an industry wants to obscure."    It reminds us that possibly the world's biggest scientific front group - Global Action to End Smoking (previously Foundation for a Smoke Free World) is still 100% funded by tobacco transnational, PMI. I had a wonderful time learning new skills, making new friends, and hearing from different perspectives in the science communications field at this week's Association of Science Communicators annual conference, my first! Here are 3 things that stood out to me: 1) Most of us stumbled into this field by serendipity as I myself did. All of us science communicators can relate to the question we receive often, "You do what?" For me, what has taken the longest - and still requires some work - is to remind myself I belong in this field even though I don't have a traditional science background. 2) The best laid plans may often go awry. No matter how much planning that goes into the release of a report, event production, or responding to a big media moment, it is often the thing you didn't expect which can cause the most stress which leads me to my biggest takeaway below. 3) When the goings get tough, be grateful to be on a highly talented and supportive team. At PhRMA, our public affairs team is the best of the best. But it's not because of any metrics or how we shape our message, it is because we have each others back, and all work together for one common goal: Helping advance medicine for patients. I'm so grateful I was able to attend ASC 2024 Science Talk - especially alongside my colleague from the PhRMA Foundation, Emily Ortman. Cheers to science! #SciComm #Biopharmaceuticals

The research indicates that the life sciences innovation landscape in the UK extends beyond the traditional Golden Triangle of Oxford, Cambridge, and London. Cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Manchester, along with Bristol, are making significant contributions to the global life sciences sector, with their universities ranking in the top 50 worldwide. The strength of the UK's life sciences ecosystem is attributed to leading academic and research institutions, with 31 of the Future50 companies emerging from or being closely linked to UK universities. While many of these institutions are in the Golden Triangle, others, including the Universities of Dundee, Edinburgh, Manchester, Warwick, and Bristol, also play a crucial role. #futureofai #ukeducation #lifesciences
