”The river, revered locally as "Una" or "the One," is a stunning natural wonder and a vital ecological and cultural resource. The river's source is one of the deepest karstic springs on Earth, and its waters flow from Croatia into Bosnia, symbolising unity and shared heritage across borders. The entire headwater section is protected under the Natura 2000 network, an EU initiative to preserve habitats and species of European importance. As it flows into Bosnia and Herzegovina, parts of it are protected as a national park. Despite these protections, an investor recently began constructing a hydropower plant just downstream of the river's source, disregarding the site's protected status and without valid permits. This illegal action threatens to destroy a crucial ecosystem, home to several threatened species and risks significant environmental damage downstream. The rapid and unauthorised development has alarmed local communities, who rely on the Una for drinking water, recreation, and cultural identity.” https://lnkd.in/eB_qDDVP

Senior Policy Expert on Nature Based Solutions, Regeneration, Nature Restoration, Rewilding, Roadless Areas
Celebrating a Milestone in River Restoration! We're witnessing a remarkable movement across Europe – the dismantling of dams and the revival of our rivers to their natural glory. This isn't just about removing concrete structures; it's about reconnecting with nature and allowing life to flourish again. In Finland, the Kangaskoski Dam removal has seen salmon return to spawn for the first time in 100 years. It's a powerful symbol of nature's resilience and our ability to make amends. The EU’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy is not just a plan on paper; it's an action in motion. WiToestore 25,000 km of rivers, we're paving the way for a future where biodiversity thrives and ecosystems are robust. Spain, Sweden, and France are leading by example, with a record number of dam removals. This is a testament to what we can achieve when prioritizing our planet. Let's celebrate these successes and support initiatives restoring our rivers. Every dam removal is a step towards restoring life on Earth. #RiverRestoration #Biodiversity #SustainableFuture #NatureRestoration ##Regeneration

Conservation Collides with Local Rights in the Fight over Chagos Islands The UK's creation of a marine protected area without consulting the Chagossians has sparked controversy over colonial imposition and local rights. Jessica MacCarthy, Conservation Analyst at the Marine Conservation Institute, says, "Recognition and respect for local communities is incredibly important." She notes "the need for improvement in consultation and informed discussion around local and Indigenous communities in MPA designation, management, and processes." Both the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and Marine Protection Atlas, two leading marine-conservation organizations, have removed Chagos from their databases of protected areas. Elizabeth Pike, director of the Marine Protection Atlas, remarked, "Until the Chagossian people decide what they want, we won’t count Chagos as protected." Read more about this complex issue and the voices advocating for both conservation and local rights. #MarineConservation #LocalRights #ChagosIslands #IndigenousRights #EnvironmentalJustice #MPA #DialogueEarth

One of the Balkans’ most unique and sacred rivers is under threat from ongoing construction of a small hydroelectric plant in Croatia. The River Una provides drinking water for local communities and is home to 17 threatened species. Parts of it are also protected under the Natura 2000 Network and protected under EU law. So protesters and NGOs took matters into their own hands, and forced authorities to assess whether the construction had the right permits. They found that the necessary permits were issued without any assessment of the impacts on the natura 2000 site and protected habitats and species, which was required under the national and EU law. We’ve been working to protect the Balkans’ vital river systems for years, and are working with local partners to analyse the legal implications of this case and urging the authorities to take appropriate action. “As a Natura 2000 site, UNESCO World Heritage Site and with national park status, the Una River is governed by a number of national and international regulations that must be adhered to before authorizing a project like this. We urge the authorities to act swiftly to safeguard the river and its crucial ecosystem, as this project has proceeded without the necessary assessment of its impact on a protected site.” Maja Pravuljac, ClientEarth legal expert Natural systems like these rivers are essential if we are to secure a healthy future. We have lost about 50% of the world's coral reefs in the last 30 years. If the current rate continues, 90% of reefs will be threatened by 2030, and nearly all could be gone by 2050. On World Oceans Day, conservationists across the world remind us that the disappearance of marine species is also linked to this loss of coral, the world could lose 30-50% of all species by the end of the century if current trends continue. That is why at Pelorus Foundation we support grassroots, community-based conservation through our local project partner Oceans Alive Kenya, who are driving progress on coral conservation with the fist co-managed Marine Protected Area in Kuruwitu. Did You Know? There is a dedicated day for seagrass. In 2022, the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 1st as #WorldSeagrassDay The General Assembly acknowledged the additional contribution and importance of #carbonsequestration resulting from the restoration of ecosystems to the achievement of the long-term temperature goal of the #ParisAgreement. The resolution highlighted the urgent need to raise awareness at all levels and to promote and facilitate actions for the conservation of seagrasses in order to contribute to their health and development, bearing in mind that enhancing ecosystem services and functions is important for the achievement of the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. ↪️ Join us as we bring to you #Pacific experts working on the conservation of seagrass for a virtual #talanoa session on March 1st from 1430 to 1630 (FJT). 🔗Register now on https://bitly.ws/3djbh Pacific Community-SPC Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) #WorldSeagrassDay #MACBLUE #BlueCarbon

2023 was the hottest year ever recorded and our precious wildlife and beautiful places are on the brink. This year a global coral bleaching event was declared, and our Great Barrier Reef has been devastated by one of the worst bleaching events scientists have ever seen. As climate change escalates, we’re seeing more disastrous marine heatwaves that are cooking our Reef. Australian communities are also facing increasingly deadly floods, bushfires and droughts fuelled by climate change. To give the Reef a fighting chance and to protect Australian lives and livelihoods the science says that Australian governments must stop approving new coal mines that pollute and warm our planet. That’s why we’re representing Mackay Conservation Group and Australian Conservation Foundation in the Queensland Land Court to stop the approval of one of the biggest proposed new coal projects in Australia, Winchester South. Will you make an urgent tax-time donation and help drive crucial court cases like this? Donate now: https://lnkd.in/esF982Dp

The Neretva river is more than what you can imagine - its basin includes underground rivers, karst poljes, wetlands of international importance. All of these threatened by the Upper Horizons hydropower project. #StopUpperHorizons
Seven Reasons to #StopUpperHorizons No.7 Stopping Upper Horizons will help protect the Neretva The entire Neretva river basin is threatened by tens of hydropower projects including Ulog, Upper Neretva, Upper Horizons, Glavatičevo, and Ljuta. On 11th November 2023 people from all over the country protested in Konjic against the destruction of Neretva and its tributaries. Stopping Upper Horizons is a crucial step in the fight for Neretva! We call on the governments of Bosnia and Herzegovina to cancel these destructive plans, ensure legal protection for the last remaining natural river stretches, and thus fulfil the recommendations of the Bern Convention on the conservation of European wildlife. #StopUpperHorizons Protect the hidden rivers of BiH!
