Last week, I had a privilege to speak on the annual European Affairs Committee, an event our office organized in Frankfurt for the executives and directors from all over #HyundaiMotorGroup. It was wonderful to reaffirm our commitment to #electrification and discuss challenges and opportunities ongoing #rEVolution brings. Special thanks to all the guests and to my colleagues for flawless organization. In my presentation, I focused on 3 most pressing trade issues automotive industry is currently facing: 🚗 Anti-Subsidy Investigation into the Chinese-made EVs. Surely one of the hottest topics of this Fall and of the many examples of more "assertive" trade policy of the EU towards China. 🔋 Battery Rules of Origin within the EU/UK Free Trade Agreement, which will get so strict that not even EU-assembled cells will be able to meet them and thus qualify for 0% tariff. If left unchanged, car makers will have to pay 10% on the import to the UK for vast majority of battery electric vehicles, which will hurt the competitiveness and open the door for Chinese manufacturers. Btw, ICEs will still qualify for preferential treatment, so we may get into a situation where we will have to pay tariff for BEVs, but not for ICEs. 💶 Revision of French EV Purchase Incentive Scheme, which will restrict access to the the EV purchase incentive for the models made outside of Europe and thus represents one of many trade barriers appearing in Europe and all over the world in the post-COVID world. #automotive #Hyundai #Kia #Genesis #EAC

Hi EV addicts, the European Commission has initiated an anti-subsidy investigation into imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) manufactured in China, bringing to light concerns about China’s pre-allocated subsidies mechanism and its impact on Europe's nascent electric vehicle industry. >> Key factors driving the EU's decision to investigate include: 1. Significant Chinese state support for the electric vehicle industry. 2. A marked increase in low-priced BEV exports to Europe. 3. Over-capacity in China's BEV manufacturing that could lead to more exports. >> One of the focal points of the probe is the system of pre-allocated subsidies, a specific mechanism where funds are earmarked for select firms in advance. This underlines Beijing's direct backing for its key players in the BEV market. After BYD, one of China's major BEV manufacturers, Tesla, an American automaker, emerged as the second-largest recipient of these subsidies from 2020 to 2022, garnering RMB 1.24 billion (USD 192 million). Volkswagen's collaborations with Chinese firms SAIC and FAW also received RMB 0.58 billion (USD 79 million) during the same timeframe. >> Historical data indicates that China’s global BEV exports have jumped dramatically, from 4% in 2020 to 21% in 2022. Several BEVs exported from China to the EU hail from well-known international brands, including Tesla, Renault, and BMW. >> The European Commission's investigation is proactive, aiming to shield Europe’s BEV industry from potential threats rather than reacting to damages that have already occurred. This move is reminiscent of the EU's approach to the solar photovoltaic (PV) sector a decade ago, and the Commission hopes to avoid a similar downturn for Europe’s BEV market. >> The outcome of the investigation is eagerly anticipated, as it will influence the trade dynamics between the EU and China and might pave the way for future trade defense strategies across other industries. 💥 Today, European Commission pre-disclosed provisional duties on subsidised imports of battery electric vehicles (#BEVs) from #China 🔋 🚗 👉 BYD: 17,4% (2023 exports to EU: 13,500 BEVs) 👉 Geely: 20% (2023 exports to EU: 264,300 BEVs) 👉 SAIC: 38,1% (2023 exports to EU: 152,700 BEVs) 🚨 All other BEV manufacturers in China will pay 21% or 38,1% depending on whether they cooperated during the investigation, except ... 🥁 Tesla! Who asked for an individual duty calculation (2023 exports to the EU: 278,300 BEVs). The other manufacturers can also request this. ✒ These duties will go on top of the regular 10% import duty on all BEVs (FYI, China has its own import duty of 15% on BEVs). 🚀 This means almost 50% for SAIC, 30% for Geely (owner of Volvo), but only 27% for BYD - well below the 50% suggested by Rhodium Group for vertically integrated and highly cost-competitive companies like BYD. 💡 If you're interested in excellent insights on Chinese EVs, I highly suggest following Gregor Sebastian from Rhodium Group and Fernando Martín, Angelo Kruger & Simon J. Mitsubishi’s departure from the PRC "highlights the broader challenges that foreign automakers face in China and the significant shifts in the global automotive sector," writes UTS:ACRI Associate Professor - Research Marina Zhang in the East Asia Forum. She makes the case that "Foreign automakers must be agile and adaptive to succeed in the Chinese market. They need to adopt a pragmatic approach in their collaborative research and development (R&D) and product design endeavours with Chinese entities.
