Let's talk about challenges, y'all. As Black business owners in America, we know them all too well. From systemic barriers to everyday hurdles, the road to success can feel like climbing Mount Everest in house shoes. But here's the thing: challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones. Think about it: every obstacle you overcome, every hurdle you leap, makes you stronger, wiser, and more resilient. You learn to adapt, innovate, and find solutions where others see only problems. That's the magic of the Black hustle, the fire that burns bright in our hearts. Just look at Kenneth Chenault, former CEO of JPMorgan Chase. A plant will only grow as big as the environment it is in. Right now, less than 4% of Black-owned businesses have a team behind them (McKinsey report 2023) In the past year, I have observed that Black entrepreneurs have been getting a lot of support with starting their businesses but now we need to start thinking about how to scale these businesses 🎯 The answer to this, I think, is building strong teams. This Black history month you will not see me as often as you usually do. Like in my photo, last year I was on multiple panels a week with my comrades, delivering keynotes and promoting the inspiring work we do at Nobellum. Instead, this year you will get to meet some of the dynamic leaders behind Nobellum ✨ You will find our Co-Founder and Chief Partnerships officer Malcolm Wright at BMO's Black History Month Fire Chat. You will hear our other co-founder Kathryn Lawrence speak at the Power of Community hosted by @BFN, DMZ, BDC. You will meet the newest member of our team Laura Scarlett Martin 🚀 at Public Services and Procurement Canada | Services publics et Approvisionnement Canada's annual Diversity Expo and judging a hackathon hosted by NSBE Professionals | National Society of Black Engineers, University of Toronto Chapter. If you want a plant to grow and tap into its real potential you've got to take it out of the safe little box you've built around it. This could mean your leaders or your business or both 💬 And believe me, growth is scary! There is no easy way around it. But this is an essential part of changing the landscape and scaling, otherwise we will not transfer knowledge, we will not empower future leaders, and we will stay in the same spot as we were in the year before. What inspired you to start your Black-owned business, and how does it reflect your unique vision and values? The People's Voice Creative Agency was founded with a distinct vision aimed at addressing the need for personalized and impactful learning experiences. Motivated by a leadership statement crafted almost five years ago, which emphasizes being a leader who develops others, the agency strives to go beyond conventional training methods. Recognizing that individuals require more than cookie-cutter approaches, The People's Voice focuses on providing capacity-building resources and vertical development. Through group learning opportunities and personal branding resources available at my personal website www.lacimckinney.com, I am dedicated to actualizing my commitment to fostering growth and development in others. Can you share a standout moment or achievement that you're particularly proud of in your journey as a Black business owner?  A defining moment in The People's Voice Creative Agency unfolded during the challenging times of COVID-19. Embarking on the journey of starting a business is often viewed as half the battle. Amid the pandemic, when many businesses faced setbacks, my decision to pivot demonstrated unwavering commitment to my ultimate goal. Overcoming the fear of imperfection and persisting in the pursuit of my vision exemplifies the tenacity that sets my business apart, making this a standout moment in my entrepreneurial journey. In what ways do you contribute to empowering other Black entrepreneurs, and what advice would you give to those aspiring to start their own businesses?  I am dedicated to empowering fellow Black entrepreneurs, by contributing through various avenues. Sharing relevant content geared towards enhancing leadership skills serves as a simple yet impactful way to support others on their entrepreneurial journey. Beyond that, my commitment extends to sharing valuable resources with entrepreneurial besties, including information on grants and business-building tools. My former involvement on the Impact Ventures Board, the Dallas Entrepreneurs Center Ambassador program committee, and contributing to the launch of Dallas Start Up Week's inaugural Disrupt Dallas Event for Black and Brown founders underscores my commitment to fostering a supportive ecosystem.
