Did you know that the European Union has an anthem? The final movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony has been the official Anthem of the European Union since 1985. To celebrate the 200th Anniversary of its official presentation, several international European Institutions launched the “Ode2Joy” campaign. Musicians, dancers and artists from around the globe were invited to portray the values represented by the song through their art. Among the submissions received across the world, only seven winners were chosen! The EU in Myanmar is proud to announce that Myanmar organization’s "Artis-Hood" has been selected as one of the winners, who put forward an interpretive dance performance in the streets of Yangon. Our heartfelt congratulations to them! Ode2Joy Challenge is run by a consortium of Centre Européen de Musique, European Students' Association for Cultural Heritage, European Movement International, Europa Nostra, Europa Union Youth Orchestra, Fondation Hippocrène, and their supporting partners. 🎼🌍 In this year marking the bicentenary of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, we are proud to share an inspiring initiative from the members of the pan-European network of Houses and Museums of European Musicians HMEM), initiated by the Centre Européen de Musique. This network, with Europa Nostra as a principal partner, launches a solemn call to all European citizens: "Use your vote for Peace! Use your vote for Solidarity! Use your vote for Europe!". Adopted by all the members of the HMEM network, this call highlights the crucial importance of participating in the European elections and supporting the fundamental values of peace, solidarity, and unity that lie at the heart of the European project. On May 8, 2024, during the annual meeting in Wuppertal, Germany, the HMEM members celebrated the bicentenary of the premiere of Beethoven's 9th Symphony together. The special concert on May 7, 2024, was a highlight of celebration and reflection, illustrating the unifying power of music. The HMEM network brings together prestigious institutions such as the Beethoven-Haus Bonn in Germany, the Amália Rodrigues Foundation in Portugal, the Franz Liszt Museum in Hungary, and many others. This diversity testifies to the richness and diversity of European musical heritage. We are also proud of our partnerships with prestigious projects like the European Heritage Hub an EU-funded pilot project led by Europa Nostra. The Centre Européen de Musique is the only organization representing the intangible heritage of music. These collaborations strengthen our efforts to promote music as a vector for social cohesion and intercultural dialogue. Recently published, ‘The Musical Heritage of Al-Andalus’ is an intriguing book that provides a comprehensive examination of Andalusian music's evolution in medieval Iberia, analyzing historical sources and modern traditions, and highlighting the complex intercultural exchanges that shaped this enduring musical legacy. Book Summary: “The Musical Heritage of Al-Andalus is a critical account of the history of Andalusian music in Iberia from the Islamic conquest of 711 to the final expulsion of the Moriscos (Spanish Muslims converted to Christianity) in the early 17th century. This volume presents the documentation that has come down to us, accompanied by critical and detailed analyses of the sources written in Arabic, Old Catalan, Castilian, Hebrew, and Latin. It is also informed by research the author has conducted on modern Andalusian musical traditions in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. While the cultural achievements of medieval Muslim Spain have been the topic of a large number of scholarly and popular publications in recent decades, what may arguably be its most enduring contribution – music – has been almost entirely neglected. The overarching purpose of this work is to elucidate as clearly as possible the many different types of musical interactions that took place in medieval Iberia and the complexity of the various borrowings, adaptations, hybridizations, and appropriations involved.” Available: OPEN ACCESS (FREE): https://lnkd.in/d2KTCT3i Paperback: https://lnkd.in/dXNuvzV3 Tags: #music_zubairsbookshelf #spain_zubairsbookshelf

How to use folklore in non-commercial ways, such as fair use in the fields of education, museums, and archives? Furthermore, discussions concern the use of folklore in commercial use and its implications for the rights of custodians—for instance, promoting new creativity in folk music, such as collaborating with local Indonesian artists and artists from abroad, preserving and utilising folklore. The attraction of folk songs/music, which use musical instruments, regional languages, or local-scale music, gives added value to music performance. When this creativity is carried out, performers should be able to preserve the local culture and be concerned with protecting both Communal Intellectual Property and individual Intellectual Property. Let’s talk bout folk’

The war on English culture and beauty. English choral music is an exquisite jewel in our rich heritage - so of course it's under attack. It’s hard to imagine how the idiots in charge think they can improve upon the great masters — Mozart, Handel, Bach, Monteverdi, Tallis, Byrd, Allegri, Elgar etcetera — with diversity. Find me something better than the goosebumps of the Lacrimosa movement in Mozart’s ‘Requiem’, the lump in throat at the high ‘C’ in Allegri’s ‘Miserere mei, Deus’, or the sweetness of Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Sussex Carol’. To quote Psalm 51 in Allegri’s ‘Miserere’: 'Open my ears and make me hear of joy and gladness: and my bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.’
