Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States that many celebrate with family and friends by gathering for a bountiful meal and practicing a day of gratitude. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations. Some Native Americans and many others take issue with how the Thanksgiving story is presented to the American public. In their view, the traditional narrative paints a deceptively happy picture of relations between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people, ignoring the long and bloody history of conflict between Native Americans and European settlers that resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands. Since 1970, protesters have gathered on Thanksgiving at the top of Cole's Hill, which overlooks Plymouth Rock, to commemorate a "National Day of Mourning." Similar events are held in other parts of the country. Volunteering and providing free meals for those in need also are common Thanksgiving Day activities. Earlier today, I spoke with someone who had recently lost a loved one. Despite their grief, they were hesitant to use LyfeIndex.com to create a tribute for their departed family member.
