Earlier this week, The Grocer published an article about Ocado’s Buy Women Built digital aisle, which has sparked divided opinions. While many have applauded the move, some have questioned whether it excludes men. Here’s my take: Entrepreneurship is tough for everyone, but female founders face unique challenges—especially when it comes to balancing business with family and childcare responsibilities. Too many talented women have had to put their careers on hold because of these pressures, and those who’ve managed to start and grow successful businesses deserve all the recognition. We can’t ignore that women often receive less funding than men, yet their products are born from a place of real passion and frustration—making them better at solving the problems we face every day. This is why it’s crucial for retailers to shine a light on these businesses. Massive kudos to Ocado’s CEO Hannah Gibson, an inspiring female leader herself, and the BUY WOMEN BUILT team for pushing this initiative forward. Such a brilliant initiative by BUY WOMEN BUILT and Ocado Retail to have a dedicated aisle for female founded brands and great to see our client Ellie Webb 💃🏽✨ and Caleño Drinks included. Wouldn’t it be amazing to extend this out to the service industry and indeed all female founded businesses no matter how big or small. Why do we need this? Only 18% of businesses founded in the last year have a female on the founding team and still in 2024 less than 2% of total investment goes to female entrepreneurs. Buying and supporting ‘women built’ is so important but often we don’t know which brands and businesses fall into this category. What do you think of this initiative? What a way to start the New Year! I recently learned I’ve been nominated for Yotpo's Amazing Women in eCommerce (AWIE) in the Innovator category. Huge thanks to Teddy Kolva for the nomination—I'm incredibly flattered! I first discovered Amazing Women in eCommerce a couple of years ago, and I immediately fell in love with its mission to spotlight the achievements of women by celebrating innovators, practitioners, and leaders in the eCommerce industry. I also appreciate that so much of what it does harkens back to philanthropy and supporting Girls Inc. The Innovator category celebrates women who have introduced groundbreaking ideas, solutions, or strategies that significantly impact the eCommerce landscape. I'm humbled to represent NEST New York and my team's accomplishments and contributions. Behind one female success story is a whole community of women advocating and rooting for her, and I would be remiss not to credit my team with this nomination. Shout-out to Erica Kale, Jade Fern, Samantha McCann, Xinge Wang, Hallie Greenberg, and our intern Ellie Malcolm because they inspire me to push myself to be a better leader. Honorees will be announced this March, but for now, I want to take a moment to congratulate all nominees. This nomination isn’t just recognition; it’s a reminder to continue pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo, even when it is uncomfortable. I don't think change has to come from who’s in power - I think we can all be part of change on a daily basis. BUY WOMEN BUILT, founded by Sahar Hashemi OBE, is all about uplifting and amplifying female-founded brands in a world where less than 2% of funding goes to women entrepreneurs. The idea is we can’t invest in all of them directly, but we can choose to buy from them - and that choice makes an impact.
